NationMaster - Encyclopedia: GM 3800 engine
A pushrod engine or overhead valve (OHV) engine is a type of piston engine that places the camshaft below the pistons (usually beside and slightly above the crankshaft in a straight engine or directly above the crankshaft in the V of a V engine) and uses pushrods or rods to...
In mid-1984, the engine was modified for transverse-mounting in smaller, FWD vehicles, and equipped with multiport fuel injection (MPFI).
Although the stroke for the 3.8 L engine remained at 3.4 in (86 mm), and the bore remained at 3.8 in (97 mm), the engine architecture was vastly changed.

The bore was enlarged to 3.8 in (thus the 3800 name) to match Buick's 350 in³ V8 for a total of 231 in³ displacement.
In 1986, the engine was modified for transverse-mounting in smaller, FWD vehicles.
Although the stroke for the 3.8 L engine remained at 3.4 in (86.36 mm), and the bore remained at the eponymous 3.8 in (96.52 mm), the engine architecture was vastly changed.

3800 engine swap - Car Forums and Automotive Chat
I am starting to look at a 3800 engine swap (I have a 97 Riviera with the S/C'd L67 3800), and the only thing that I can see being a major obsticle is that the 3400 is a 60 degree motor, whereas the 3800 is a 90 degree, hence, it will be much wider.
The trannies are the same (N/A 3800 and the 3400 both use the 4T65-E, the L67 uses the 4T65-E HD, which uses a higher 2.93 gear ratio).
There is barely enough room to rock the engine forward with the 3400...spreading the cylinders an additional 30 degrees as well as a physically larger engine isn't going to give you more room to rock it.

The piston, wrist pin and connecting rod are what differ between a normally aspirated 3800 (L36) and the supercharged short block (L67), as the supercharged ones are much heavier and stronger.
Photo 20 is a closeup shot of the piston to reveal its low tension rings to reduce internal engine friction.

The GM 3800 engine has been around for several years and uses one of the more sophisticated DIS and sequential injection systems.
If this sensor fails to operate while the engine is running there will be virtually no noticeable loss of performance since the injectors have already been sequenced.
The engine will start but might experience slight power loss or hesitation if the injectors are out of sequence with the cylinders.

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - V6
It is the second most common engine configuration in modern cars after the straight-4; it shares with that engine a compactness very suited to the popular front wheel drive layout, and is becoming more popular as car weights increase.
V6 engines that are converted from V8 engines often have three shared crankpins arranged at 120° from each other, similar to a inline 3-cylinder with two pistons per crankpin.
This engine saw a new evolution in 1966 when it was adapted to road use and produced by a Ferrari-Fiat joint-venture for the Fiat Dino and Dino 206 GT (this car was made by Ferrari but sold under the brand Dino).

Does the engine give off a rather harsh pulsation around that RPM or is it more of a gasping, hesitating kind of feeling?
The reason I ask is that GM puts rev limiters on its cars.

It seems as if many GM 3800 engine owners have experienced a slow internal coolant leak because of a defective design in the plastic intake manifold.
Because of the leak of antifreeze, it ruined the engine.

A further evolution of the Ferrari Dino built for new Formula One 1.5 liter regulations engines had this configuration.
This new version was redesigned by Aurelio Lampredi initially as a 65° 2.0 L V6 with an aluminum block but was replaced in 1969 by a 2.4 L cast-iron block version (the Dino car was renamed the 246GT).

So, actually the 3800 can be traced all the way back to 1953 when Buick made their first V-8.
Engineers had concluded that a supercharged V-6 offers an excellent combination of virtues: compactness, durability, reliability, fuel efficiency, smoothness, and plenty of power potential.
Nearly all of the Series II refinements invested in the normally aspirated 3800 V-6 were passed on to the supercharged version in 1996.

 GM displacement on demand technology
Had GM elected to apply DOD technology to performance vehicles such as the Corvette, GTO or a future Camaro, there would be far less pressure from corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) to import sub-compacts from outside GM as is the case now.
All corporate politics aside, the engineers at GM Powertrain have designed yet another mechanical marvel, and it's all due to some remarkably modest changes to the very robust Gen III architecture on which the Gen IV is based.
GM deemed that in order for the customer to truly buy into the concept of DOD, it must be absolutely undetectable.

Material suppliers also play a major role in making an engine one of the best in the world as well, from plastic intake manifolds that boost horsepower and torque compared with designs made from more conventional materials, to composite and powder-metal components that reduce vibration and help an engine achieve world-class smoothness.
