GM 54-Degree V6 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The engine was reworked substantially between the 3.0 L L81 and 3.2 L LA3, but the bore centers and deck height were retained.
This was a 3175cc (194 in³) engine and produced 220 hp (164.1 kW) and 218 ft.lbf (296 Nm).
This engine was used in the American versions of these models as well.

 V6/60 Degree Block
The 3.4L is a unique v6/60 as the bore size was increased to 3.03mm/.120" larger then the 2.8/3.1-liter engines.
As far as v6/60deg engine blocks go for performance use and modifications, you have 3 choices based on what is available.
The 3.1 engine is essentially the same block as the 1985-89 2.8 except with a longer stroke crank that went to 3.312.

American Metal Market: GM downshifts V-6 production plans - Brief Article
GM sources here said that the need for the additional engines may not develop as soon as company officials thought and the situation was under review.
GM decided a few months ago that by late next year it would need more of the 3.0-liter engines than it can build at the British plant (AMM, Jan. 28) and began drafting plans to manufacture the additional engines on standard, "off-the-shelf" machinery on this side of the Atlantic.
Altogether, the Detroit-based automaker has more new engines scheduled for introduction in North America during the first decade of the 21st Century than any other domestic automaker, providing numerous opportunities for suppliers who may not be doing much business currently with GM's powertrain operations.

 CarSpyShots.net Forums: GM's 3.9L V6 (that isn't a 3.9L)
The most resounding praise GM can get regarding pushrods is the new LS7 engine, at leat in the Z06 it aceives performance close to Mercedes SLR for a price lower than a viper.
By the way, one of my favorite GM cars from the '80s (if only to drive) was the GNX, so please don't assume that I'm either auto-anti-GM or -Buick or -3.8L V6...
Arguably, in this segment dominated by relatively small, high output (in other words, high specific output) engines from Japanese makes, I would think there'd be some concern about aiding the perception that a company like GM has to go to "almost 4.0L" of displacement to compete with the Japanese.

We prefer to use the FWD engines that are in the mid-sized GM cars like Alero, Grand Am, Malibu and APV vans because the technology is much better.
You could use an Engine Management System like Haltech or Accel but these systems are more than twice the cost of our system and they do not furnish a pre-wired ready to use harness.

For example, my Bayliner is powered by a carb'ed and marinized version of the GM corporate 4.3L V6 truck engine.
So all the engines are GM truck based and were easy to figure out.
They both use the same GM engines, the only difference is the drive.

Cadillac CTS is a five-passenger, four-door sports sedan powered by a 3.2-liter dohc V6 engine.
Driving this engine in a manual-transmission model, we found we had to downshift not once but twice to keep the engine in the powerband, and in the automatic, we either kicked the transmission down by hand or foot quite a lot when driving in the mountains of southern California.

GM loyalists keep pointing out that this engine is smaller and delivers better fuel economy then the others.
The premium engines will be used by Cadillac and IIRC, Buick and will be start with the new 3.6 DOHC engine.
But those economies might not be realized if every car they make (all hundreds of thousands of copies of Malibus, G6s, CTS', LaCrosses, etc) has the same High Feature V6 due to the technology being used in those motors.

 CarSpyShots.net Forums: Same Engine/Displacement/Design, But One's A V6 & the other's A V8?
In fact, some engine swap books and weblinks mention that fact in replacing the Astro/Safari 4.3 V6 with the GM 5.7 as almost a straight drop-in, because the engines are related in no small way.
The way I understood his question is that the engines are almost completely the same, including displacement, engine "size." In that case, one couldn't be a cut-down version of the other, as the added cylinders would increase the displacement.
I would think that the difference between a V6 and V8 of identical displacement would be that the V6's torque would be slightly higher (bigger pistons and stroke) and the horsepower would come in low in the powerband.

CheersandGears.com Forums -> GM Announces New 2.8l Turbocharged Engine
Engineers from GM Powertrain in North America and FGP - the Europe-based Fiat-General Motors Powertrain consortium - as well as Holden collaborated on the development.
The powertrain engineers' experience with turbocharging at Saab was integral in refining the engines' performance, with the 2.8L V-6 Turbo delivering maximum torque by 2000 rpm and maintaining it through 4,500 rpm.
That exact engine with an intercooler, and about 12-13lbs of boost would probably be making 300+hp, and in a 2800 car, it would be about as fast as a Camaro SS.

TSN: Alt.Autos.Saab: Re: Turbo vs. V6
GM does quite well with ancient pushrod V6 and V8 powerplants that make more power and getter better gas mileage than some of the latest DOHC engines *of smaller displacement*.
The 3.0l V6 that followed it is actually, in all likelihood, a good engine.
For example, on a naturally aspirated car the easiest way to increase horsepower vs. another engine of the same displacement is to increase compression ratio; on a turbocharged engine you're relying on the additional cylinder pressure provided by the turbo to do that for you, so a base lower compression is highly advisible.

Finally, the new engine has a 60-degree V, not the 3.2's odd 54-degree V. With a V6, 60 degrees is optimal for smoothness.
As the 3.6 is the first engine in a large family that will power many future GM models, GM's future is suddenly looking brighter.
GM wanted a design that reflected the future, not the past, and no aircraft looks more futuristic or makes a stronger design statement than the F-117 “stealth” fighter—even though this aircraft does not actually represent the future of fighter design as second generation stealth designs are much more streamlined.

The catera's engine is a 54 degree v6 I believe, 200hp would fit nicely.
Wait, we could put a 3800 roots blower on the Catera engine and get 280hp and have the 3800 N/A as the base motor and scrap the Northstar.
How about we chop 2 cyls off of a northstar to make a 3.45ltr 4 cam V6 base motor with 240hp.

The X30XE is a 54 degree v6 built by GM at Elsmere Port.
Due to it's complexity and high cost, tuners often shy away from it, but once it's stripped, it's quite a simple engine and there are many cost effective mods for it which are common across the 4 valve/cylinder family of GM engines.
Tuning the engine further than some bolt on mods is quite an undertaking as the engine has quite a few weak spots.

 Attack Forums - Cadillac Engine
One of the reasons it is tiny is because it's not a 90 or 60-degree V6, but rather 54-degree.
Of those pioneers, they state the X30XE shares alot in common with many other GM 4 valve/cylinder engines and knowing GM, I am pretty positive a FWD transmission could be fitted with little issue.

 Malfunction Codes Reference
The other method is to perform a "NON-SCAN" diagnostic circuit check which causes the "Service Engine Soon" light to blink the codes set in the ECM.
The engine can be re-started but will continue to run in the simultaneous mode as long as the fault is present.
A knock sensor (located at the rear of the engine block) sends signals to an ESC module which then signals the ECM that knocking is being detected.

CanadianDriver: First Drive - 2003 Cadillac CTS
The only thing in common with the previous 3.0 litre V6 engine is the 54-degree angle between cylinder banks.
The engine is smooth and quiet except for a satisfying exhaust note.
Chief engineer Jack Horvath said the car is a foot shorter than Seville over-all, but its wheelbase, at 113.4 inches, is two inches longer.
