GM had been promising a Cavalier replacement for years, and during those years rumors of a "global" platform called Delta was to underpin it.
After many revisions and changes, the "new" Delta platform hit the streets in 2003 as Saturn's S-Series replacement the ION.
While the Delta architecture seemed promising, the ION was developed on the cheap and NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) was poor and its questionable styling kept the ION from being a hit.

Like the Delta platform, the Kappa is capable of acquiring all of the Ecotec 4-cylinders mated to a specially-tuned 5-speed manual and all Kappa’s are carried by independent front/rear suspension with a near 50/50 weight distribution.

GM adapted some of the LS6 engineering, including the cylinder heads, but the big change was the increase in displacement from 5.7 to 6.0L (cylinders bored out from 3.90 to 4.0 in.), a larger diameter throttle body and new fuel injectors, which actually are smaller than the previous ones.
GM is installing what had been a Cadillac exclusive powerplant in a premum Bonneville model, the 2005 GXP.
