GM Crops and Developing Countries: UK Food Group Briefing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Recent experience demonstrates that the introduction and dissemination of GM technologies is already proceeding in advance of developing country capacity to assess the risks and benefits for themselves.
While the potential benefits that are claimed for GM technology appear to be almost unlimited, it is not clear how they could be delivered and what risks will arise in terms of the technology itself or in terms of how it is controlled.
The trade war between the USA and Europe over GM foods, the dumping of GM food aid by the USA on unwilling but hungry recipients and the headlong rush into biotechnology by rich countries threatens the livelihoods of the poor, the eradication of hunger and the sustainability of the environment.

 Conference #7
The traits of interest for GM forest research include herbicide tolerance and pest resistance (as for crops), but also a range of other features, such as delayed flowering (so that trees can be harvested before they pollinate) or lowered amounts of lignin (to reduce the costs and environmental pollution associated with paper-making).
The minimum requirements for GM gene flow to occur are thus the presence of a sexually-compatible non-GM population in close proximity to the GM population, the possibility of outcrossing between the two populations and the production of fertile hybrids.
Whether gene flow from GM populations is different, or has a greater potential impact, than gene flow from certain kinds of non-GM populations, such as alien (introduced) species or modern populations selected for similar characteristics as GM populations (such as increased growth rates or disease resistance).

FAO: Biotechnology in Food and Agriculture: Conference 12
Their use is most substantial in the crop sector, where the GM crop species involved are ones that are extensively traded internationally.
As in other years, the vast majority (73%) of GM crops cultivated in 2003 were modified for herbicide tolerance, while 18% were modified for insect resistance and 8% were modified for both traits.
After individual GM products have been approved, the regulatory framework may include provisions for post-release monitoring of the impacts of GMOs, where feedback from the public, especially those in rural areas where they are produced, would be of particular importance.

The main idea of GM is to be a fun tool for creating games, and not to be completely serious development enviroment (as this kind of game makers never really are).
However, GM is not very suitable for that since the startup time of GM is relatively slow and the game runner itself is already 1mb in size making the apps created with GM quite big.
Good side of GM is that you can concentrate more on designing the actual game, than the underlying engine that runs the game, as that has already been created for you.

Platform mergers: scaled back, but still part of GM's planning for the 1990s - Technology & Trends Ward's Auto World - ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Only one full-blown platform merger is scheduled for GM cars during the next decade, and that one - which involves the company's L-, N- and J-body cars - is expected to be carried out over a three model-year period, 1992, '93 and '94.
GM now has both the flexible manufacturing techniques and methods needed at its stamping and assembly plants to tum out more distinguishable cars in the same line with a high degree of automation.
If GM had gone through with some of the platform consolidations that once were planned for the '90s, some confusion probably would have occurred.

Posted by: Josh E. Oliver at April 13, 2005 11:00 PM Putting a GM corporate badge on "distinctive" brands like Saturn, Saab and Hummer is completely illogical and contradictory to the premise of making them individualistic in the first place.

 Choike - GM food
The first GM crop was commercialized in 1994, and now, ten years later, the promises made by the biotech industry and its powerful lobby groups have still not materialized.
GM crops guarantee neither food security nor equitable access to food, quite the opposite says this note from the Editor by Dr.Mae-Wan Ho.
The vast majority of those growing genetically modified (GM) crops are small-scale resource-poor farmers, according to a new study that appears to counterbalance claims that GM technology only benefits large land-owners and food producers.

Rumor has it, that the Chinese may be attempting to develop their own GM products, and are resisting U.S. GMOs as a delaying tactic for creating their own genetically engineered seeds, which they can then reap the benefits of, and compete with the U.S. in their own market or maybe, another market.

 cars - GM Daewoo
GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM Daewoo or GMDAT) was first established as National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-ku, Incheon, South Korea.
Following the GM buyout in 2002, GM Daewoo lost interest in its overseas assets; the deals on supplies of pre-assembled CKD kits should end in 2005 and the facilities are likely to rely on its own production capabilites since that point.
Starting in 2005, GM will brand all Daewoos as Chevrolets, except for in China (where it will be Buick), South Korea and Thailand (where Daewoo is retained), in an effort to make Chevrolet its global brand.

All this is G.M.'s fault, the report indicated, because this is the trend in automotive engineering at G.M., and what to G.M. is a trend, to Ford and Chrysler is a command.

But Americans have essentially the same opinion about the overall safety of GM foods as they did in 2001: 27% of consumers say that GM foods are “basically safe” (down from 29%), while 25% say that they are “basically unsafe” (the same as in 2001).
Americans oppose a ban on GM foods, but are strongly supportive of a regulatory process that directly involves the FDA.
