2003 SEMA Show - GM Enthusiast Network
But now a new GM engine is creating the same buzz that accompanied the small-block’s debut nearly 50 years ago: the inline four-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC Ecotec is poised to become the next big thing from GM in high-volume production cars, high-performance specialty vehicles and high-horsepower competition applications.
GM Racing has established Ecotec’s performance credentials on the track by setting speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats with a race-prepared 700-horsepower turbocharged engine and winning championships in NHRA front-wheel-drive drag racing classes with turbocharged Ecotec engines that produce more than 1,000 horsepower.
GM Racing’s front-wheel-drive Cavalier and Sunfire entries in the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series sprint the quarter-mile in 8 seconds with their 1000-plus-horsepower race-prepared turbocharged Ecotec engines.

GM understands the issue of our nation's dependency on foreign oil as well as anyone, and we're doing as much or more than anyone to address the issue, from making our gasoline engines more fuel-efficient to investing heavily in hybrid and fuel cell powertrains.
GM was and is proud to have brought the electric vehicle concept as far as it did and further than any other electric vehicle project attempted by any other automaker around the globe.
GM's fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which enhances the technology found in today's HydroGen3 fuel cell vehicle, (currently in demonstration fleets around the world), will be introduced later this year and will represent a leap forward toward a production ready version of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

GM estimates that between 300 and 500 people a year are killed in fires that erupt in its vehicles when they crash.
The callous reasoning: if GM could install a safer fuel tank for $2.40 per car or less, it stood to save money; anything more meant it was cheaper to pay for the deaths than to save lives.
GM had repeatedly tried—and continues--to quash motions requesting the evidence and to seek protective orders based on claims that the documents are protected by attorney-client privilege.

GM also made sure that the overall size and shape of the "package" would fit in a FWD application, too, so it should be no surprise that the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP is available with the 5.3L this year.
The GM engineers did their homework when they designed these engines, so they haven't had to make a lot of changes, but there are four engines, each with a different combination of parts, so there are still three rods, four blocks, six cranks and seven heads to keep track of so far.
GM spent a lot of time designing the heads with "replicated ports," making sure that all the intake ports and exhaust ports were identical to each other so the airflow was exactly the same for every cylinder.

The global engine family was designed to encompass a range of displacements to meet market requirements around the world.
By starting with a totally new architecture, engineers were free to anticipate many divergent uses for the global V-6 and design it for exceptional flexibility, avoiding the problems that arise when a powertrain designed for a relatively limited purpose must be adapted for a different vehicle architecture or drive layout.
The global V-6 engine family is built at GM Powertrain's St. Catharines engine plant and Holden's Port Melbourne facility.
