Topic: GM K platform

GM K platform (FWD) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.tamu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The General Motors K platform (commonly called the K-body) was the basis of the Cadillac Seville model over two entirely different automobile platforms.
Technically, though, the architecture was shared under a different name: the GM G platform was based on the K and produced at the same time.
The K platform was updated in 1997 with improved suspension geometry.

Report: Kerkorian Sells Full Stake in GM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
GM has undertaken a massive turnaround plan, cutting production and reducing costs by winning health care concessions from the UAW and persuading about 35,000 hourly workers to leave under early retirement or buyout plans.
GM has lost more than $3 billion in the first nine months of the year, and is slashing its U.S. work force in an effort to cut costs.
GM announced in April that it had a tentative deal to sell a 51 percent stake in GMAC to a consortium of investors led by Cerberus Capital Management, a private investment company.

Platform mergers: scaled back, but still part of GM's planning for the 1990s - Technology & Trends Ward's Auto World - ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Only one full-blown platform merger is scheduled for GM cars during the next decade, and that one - which involves the company's L-, N- and J-body cars - is expected to be carried out over a three model-year period, 1992, '93 and '94.
GM now has both the flexible manufacturing techniques and methods needed at its stamping and assembly plants to tum out more distinguishable cars in the same line with a high degree of automation.
If GM had gone through with some of the platform consolidations that once were planned for the '90s, some confusion probably would have occurred.

AP Wire | 02/10/2006 | Column: GM turnaround plans lack magnitude
Since GM is looking to shed a 51 percent stake in its highly profitable financing arm, General Motors Acceptance Corp., it's easy to argue that the dividend should have been eliminated rather than halved.
True enough, GM hasn't lived up to its word, but the union also bears responsibility for playing hard-enough ball to extract such extravagant promises.
GM needs a RAZR badly, and management has given little hint anything so bold is in the works.

GM FastLane Blog: A Two-Mode Hybrid for Highway Driving
Posted by: Paul K on June 27, 2005 11:59 PM That's all well and good but given the ridiculous and quite frankly laughable recent diatribe against GM by NY Times editor Tom Friedman GM should immediately cut their advertising as they did with the LA Times.
It is simply unacceptable that GM continues to line the pockets of an organization which has apparently made it one of its stated missions to unreasonably attack GM at every chance even when those attacks have no basis in fact.
GM already sells perfectly good diesel cars in the EU market (where 6 out of every 10 cars sold is diesel powered) through its Vauxhall and Opel nameplates.

If a program needs to pass a node reference over the network, it can use gm_node_id_to_global_id() to generate 32-bit global IDs that can safely be passed around the network, but must be converted back to a local node ID on the receiver with gm_global_id_to_node_id().

Plymouth Reliant, Dodge Aries, and Chrysler LeBaron: the K-cars
The K-car platform proved eminently flexible, being stretched, compressed, and reconfigured to produce such diverse vehicles as the famed minivan (the car that really saved Chrysler's bacon) and the exotic two seat Chrysler's TC by Maserati grand tourer.
The K's boxy shape was functional; in a shot at the Japanese competition, Chrysler ads boasted that the K's front and rear benches seated "six Americans." The trunk was decently sized.
The K platform spawned almost all of Chrysler's products for the 80s, and sales of the car were strong enough to bring Chrysler back from the brink of bankruptcy.

Context April/May 2002 Issue -- Insight: Platforms for Growth
Instead of just trying to sell more of existing lines of individual products and services, GM, the No. 1 auto maker (www.gm.com), and Deere, which makes heavy equipment (www.deere.com), are viewing their extensive product lines as the launching pad for new types of information-based services.
At Deere, executives are tapping the potential of platforms mostly by adding technology to their products so that, for instance, farmers can have their combines collect detailed information on a field’s crop yields and then transmit the data wirelessly to a computer.
That once would have been heresy at GM, but licensing allows GM to insert OnStar into the lives of as many people as possible and gives GM the biggest possible technology platform on which to build.
