List of GM engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fiat Diesel engine has 1900 ccm, but before this cooperation, Opel had already developed two own engines, namely 2-litre Diesels with 82 and 100 hp; which were installed mostly in the Vectra B. GM Daewoo recently licensed two common rail designs from VM Motori.
Holden in Australia also used straight-6 engines for a number of years in their family sedan models, with local engines ranging in size from 2.15L (132ci) in the original Holden 48-215 of 1948, to the 3.3L (202ci) six used in the 1970's and 80's, up until 1985 with the VK Commodore model.
Since the old engine was considered unsuitable, and a new engine hadn't been developed, the VL Commodore sported the 3.0L Nissan RB30 engine, the last straight six used in a Commodore.

Pontiac Solstice Forum - My Stroll down to the Pontiac Dealership for Solstice info and my Findings
GM can be dumb, but if 40K people want a solstice, im sure they will build more.
Implied from the article and quotes from the chief engineer and the vehicle line executive was because of the way the body panels are formed (sheet hydroforming), the long cycle times limit the usage to niche vehicles in the volume of only 20,000 vehicles or so.
I think GM is positioning the intro Solstice not as a muscle car but a roadster and will offer options later to make it a muscle car for those who want that.

Built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive architecture, the CTS features a new 3.2L V6 engine and was the first North American vehicle to be rigorously tested at the famed Nürburgring track in Germany.
Another electronic feature is also a first for GM: engine braking in all five gears, giving the automatic the same sporty feel as a downshifting manual.
The new Sigma architecture is the first usage of ultra high-strength steel at GM, and the first time the steel has been incorporated as a welded member of the structure.

What is GM/Pontiac likely to do for higher HP version? - Pontiac Solstice Forum
GM knows how to build them and one of the things I look for in a car destined for max handling is an engine behind the front axle.
This is the typical approach that GM has taken in the past and I get the feeling they want to make a break from the cheasy bean counter image they have had.
GM knows this, and will select the features that ellicit the most positive response from the general public and try then to mesh that with technical, physical and economical constraints.

Science Fair Projects - List of GM engines
General Motors was the pioneer of the V6 engine in the United States, putting the first American V6, the Buick Special's 198 in³ V6, on the road in 1962.
But the company quickly lost interest in the small engine family and sold it to Kaiser in 1967.
In the midst of the fuel crisis of the 1970s, GM realized that a V6 engine would be an excellent alternative to bulky straight-6 and large V8 engines, so the company bought the design back and launched the familiar 3800 line.

Engine hardware and operating conditions, after-treatment catalysts, and fuel composition all affect the amount and composition of emissions leaving the vehicle tailpipe.
While engine and after-treatment effects are generally larger than fuel effects, engine and after-treatment hardware can require specific fuel properties.

In addition, a CTS-V model offering an LS6 V8 engine, similar to the Corvette Z06 engine, with 400 hp (300 kW) matched to a six-speed manual transmission, became available in 2004.
The 3.2 L engine will go out of production in 2005, when a new 2.8 L version of the DOHC 3.6 will debut in an entry-level version of the CTS.

Electrical engineering (sometimes referred to as electrical and electronics engineering) is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.
Where a distinction is made, electrical engineering is considered to deal with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control, whereas electronics engineering deals with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits.
Another way of looking at the distinction is that electrical engineers are usually concerned with using electricity to transmit energy, while electronics engineers are concerned with using electricity to transmit information.

Weight is added not just by new engines, gearboxes, suspensions, etc, its also the redesigning of many of the safety structures of the body shell and chassis that adds the weight.
However, if the VZ is heavier than the BA, it will be the first ever full-sized Holden sedan in its 56 year history to weigh more than an equivalent Ford and that's not something either camp should be proud of.....
This is from an ex Holden engineer that did exactly this, redesign of body shell structures etc, worked a little while at Innovation too, but luckily for him he says that Ford poached him as he sees that place going down hill.
