  Engine Conversion
In spite of the impressive numbers delivered by the DRM suspension and brakes, it was the power plant that seemed to attract the most attention.
It was decided that any engine offered for street use would be, at minimum, emissions legal in 49 states if not the full 50.
It meant that engines couldn’t impress with just torque and horsepower, they would also have to idle smooth, and have flawless drivability characteristics as well.

Chevrolet Corvette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GM was seriously considering shelving the project, leaving the Corvette to be little more than a footnote in automotive history, and would have done so if not for two important events.
The first was the introduction in 1955 of Chevrolet's first V8 engine (a 265 in³ {4.3 L}) since 1919, and the second was the influence of a Soviet emigré in GM's engineering department, Zora Arkus-Duntov.
In addition to the larger engine, the C6 Z06 has a dry sump oiling system, ensuring proper engine lubrication during periods of high (lateral) acceleration and allowing the engine to be mounted low inside the chassis.

LS2 Small-Block Engine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Previous LS6 engines were balanced to a higher degree than LS1 engines; we don't know if that will be the case with the LS2, which incorporates many of the LS6's attributes.
Similar to the LS6 block, the PCV valve was moved from the rocker covers to inside the valley.
Complementing the revised engine block is a new reciprocating assembly for the LS2.

GM LS1 engine in a Chevrolet Corvette C5 The LS1 was an evolution of the earlier LT small-block V8 (and is almost identical to the LT4 except for its aluminum construction).
The LS6 shares its basic block design with the GM LS1 engine, but other changes were made such as windows cast into the block between cylinders.
A version of this engine is adapted for transverse front wheel drive application, the first time a small-block family engine has been used in this manner since the Oldsmobile Aurora of the late 90s, it had a 4.0L V8.

Inside GM's Performance Build Center — LS7 Assemble — Popular Hot Rodding
Engine assembly is divided into stations where the various parts are installed and tested.
So when GM sent out the invite to come wrench together a new engine the answer wasn't just yes, it was "hell yes!" And, it turned out this wasn't just any old motor from the General, but the most high-tech engine every produced by GM, the 500hp LS7.
It so happens that GM is understandably proud of their newest mill and of the talented people that are going to make it happen at their new, state-of-the-art 100,000-square-foot Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan.

GM announcement on LS7 & other engine stuff - Corvette Forum
GM Powertrain is introducing its new Gen IV small-block V-8 architecture for several 2005 model GM vehicles exactly 50 years after the original small-block was launched for Chevrolet in 1955.
GM Powertrain estimates that by the end of the 2005 model year, more than 90 million small-block-based engines will have been produced since the original engine's 1955 introduction.
There was a GM engine chart that leaked a long time ago, and it showed two engines that nobody had ever heard of before.

GM Displacement Engine Technology - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine
Had GM elected to apply DOD technology to performance vehicles such as the Corvette, GTO or a future Camaro, there would be far less pressure from corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) to import sub-compacts from outside GM as is the case now.
All corporate politics aside, the engineers at GM Powertrain have designed yet another mechanical marvel, and it's all due to some remarkably modest changes to the very robust Gen III architecture on which the Gen IV is based.
GM deemed that in order for the customer to truly buy into the concept of DOD, it must be absolutely undetectable.

Using a Carburetor on a GM LS1 Engine
The engines in these vehicles differ slightly in that they use cast-iron blocks, different oil pans, smaller intake valves, a taller intake manifold that raises the runners, and a dual fuel-line return system.
Today, GM offers a complete, injected LS1 in crate engine form, but the mills are also becoming easier to find in boneyards and at swap meets, making them much more affordable for those of us with little interest in their fuel injection and electronics.
The new intake uses GM manifold gaskets, and should be installed using a specific tightening sequence, as noted in this illustration from the instructions.

Developed jointly by England’s Lotus Engineering and GM Powertrain Division and manufactured by MerCruiser in Stillwater, Oklahoma, LT5 was the first American production V8 to pass the one, SAE net horsepower per cubic inch mark.
Key LT5 features were incorporated in GM V8s of today, such as the "Premium V8" series ("Northstar" and "Aurora") and the Gen IIIs.
