GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM Daewoo or GMDAT) was first established as National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-ku, Incheon, South Korea.
On November 25, 2003, the design center was relocated to the new 2-story building at the Bupyeong headquarters and assigned the task to style a new SUV based on GM's Theta automobile platform to be released in 2006.
Following the GM buyout in 2002, GM Daewoo lost interest in its overseas assets; the deals on supplies of pre-assembled CKD kits should end in 2005 and the facilities are likely to rely on its own production capabilites since that point.

Theta is the architecture for GM's current front-wheel-drive sport wagons, such as the Chevrolet Equinox and Saturn Vue.
GM's newest offerings would be smaller than current Thetas, which are larger than the RAV4 and CR-V. GM's decision likely is a response to the growing number of small sport wagons offered by Asian automakers.
GM uses the term "architecture" to signify a set of common components, performance characteristics, a common manufacturing process and a range of dimensions and connecting points for key component systems.

GM eyes hot-dip for Equinox body panels - Steel American Metal Market - Find Articles
According to GM sources, the new SUVs could make greater use of hot-dipped galvanized steel with pure zinc coatings in exposed body applications than any other vehicle built by the company in North America to date.
GM plans to sell 150,000 of the new vehicles annually, and therefore would need more than 100,000 tons of galvanized, cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel to produce the principal body, closure and structural components for those vehicles.
If GM decides to use hot-dipped galvanized instead of electro-galvanized steel in the outer panels of the Equinox, some sources indicated that would be just the "tip of the iceberg" in the big automaker's plans for such steel.

For one thing, the Equinox is considerably larger than the Vue, its platform stretched six inches compared to its Saturn cousin.
