A UAW strike at a GM assembly plant in Ohio disrupted production for 174 days, and 1100 Camaros had to be scrapped because they did not meet 1973 Federal bumper safety standards.
GM announced that this would be the final year of production for the Camaro, as the sales were not high enough to justify redesigning the platform again, and the car could not be priced high enough to make low volumes profitable (unlike the Corvette).
The car was to have been built on the GM Zeta platform, but the delay of that platform effectively killed this concept.
