GMB member Mohamed Adnam Ali an employee in the Hulme store of Asda Wal-Mart in Manchester was suspended on 27 March 2006 by management after he supplied two GMB application forms to two work colleagues during his break.

ONE of Labour's biggest union backers is to cut its donations to the party by £2 million over four years, it said yesterday.
The GMB was particularly angered by Tony Blair's New Year message, in which he promised "unsettling" reforms to the public services, and Alan Milburn's interview in The Telegraph, in which he said the Government's relationship with the private healthcare sector was "not a one-night stand".
But a GMB spokesman suggested that the union would do as much as it could within Labour Party rules to support candidates opposed to the privatisation of public services in some circumstances.

 Union calls for European ban on staff-tracking RFID
A UK trade union is calling for a Europe-wide ban on supermarkets and other employers using RFID and GPS technology to tag and track staff in the workplace.
The general workers' union GMB has submitted a report to the European Commission warning that tagging technologies are an invasion of workers' privacy and calling for legislation to restrict its use.
Paul Kenny, acting GMB general secretary, said in a statement: "GMB is concerned that the EU appears to be blissfully unaware of the possible uses of RFID and GPS-linked wearable computer technology to tag European workers and to seriously invade their right to privacy.

The GMB has launched a campaign against private equity companies since it was announced in January that the Hull Birds Eye factory is to close.
The GMB is also contacting the private equity firm Permira, which bought the Birds Eye/Iglo frozen food business from Unilever for £1.12billion, to request a meeting with managing partner Damon Buffini.
Meanwilie, the union in Hull is continuing to fight to keep the factory open and that could be the main reason why it wants a meeting with the Permira boss.

 Union warns temp agencies off Asda - 26 June 2006
The GMB union is threatening to sue recruitment agencies that provide temporary staff to the supermarket giant Asda.
The union has written to agencies warning them that it is illegal to provide cover during a strike at 20 of Asda's distribution depots and says it will prosecute if agencies fail to heed its warning.
The union will post six members at the gates of each depot equipped with surveillance devices to ensure the law is not broken.

On 7 April Kevin Curran resigned as General Secretary of the GMB union, to be replaced as acting General Secretary by the man whom he defeated in the election for the job two years, Paul Kenny.
Input to the GMB congress and the Executive is effectively controlled by the regional structures.
In the closure of the GMB’s National College, a big issue in the union, it was the Regional Secretaries who made the decision, not the Curran leadership, although Curran went along with it because the finances were not there.

GMB boss Kevin Curran has been suspended by his union's executive, it is understood.
It is understood that Mr Curran said he was carrying out the union's instructions but the executive wanted an apology which the GMB boss refused and he was suspended on full pay until the inquiry is completed in several weeks time.
Members of the executive accused him of attempting to interfere with the inquiry, adding they had been left with no choice but to suspend him after having made it clear at an earlier stage Mr Curran was not to play any part in the probe.

Overall, the GMB LGBT Network is a good form of networking with members from all regions, sharing and gaining information and knowledge, looking at policy changes, and understanding and exploring problems.

As the Wal-Mart-owned firm braces itself for the announcement of a strike ballot on Wednesday, the GMB union is promising it will place surveillance cameras outside up to 20 major Asda warehouses to ascertain the identity of staff in the event of industrial action.
If the group is found to be hiring labour to counter a strike, the GMB has threatened legal action against employment agencies under 2004 regulations designed to stop companies breaking strikes using 'scab' labour.
The GMB claims that Asda is the only UK supermarket not to engage in collective bargaining and says it has failed to pay a bonus to staff despite making hundreds of millions of pounds of profit.
