GML is the XML language for geography developed by the Open GIS consortium.
GML is not yet nearly as widely used as older and simpler formats such as ESRI shapefiles and USGS DEMs; GML3 in particular is very early in the adoption process.
GML applications are developed by combining XML schemas from the GML standard with application schemas that capture the relevant types and properties of the target domain.

GML is currently used by the UK's Ordnance Survey (until they come to their senses) for publishing their MasterMap data products.
GML format is so inefficient that it can take a very long time to import a GML file, perhaps 20 minutes on an average computer to import a 100 MB GML file.
GML entities include version information that allows distinguishing between multiple versions of the same object (that is, between objects with same unique ID assigned by the data provider).

GML is the XML data standard for the GeoWebinfrastructure, enabling Internet-connected devices to access geographical information, including, for example, merchant locations and traffic conditions.
GML profiles are logical restrictions to GML, and may be expressed by a document, an XML schema or both.

 GML Introduction
Before we look at GML itself, it is important that we draw some clear distinctions between geographic data (which is encoded in GML) and graphic interpretations of that data as might appear on a map or other form of visualization.
GML is concerned with the representation of the geographic data content.
GML is based on a common model of geography (OGC Abstract Specification) which has been developed and agreed to by the vast majority of all GIS vendors in the world.

What is GML? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: Generalized Markup Language
GML (Generalized Markup Language) is an IBM document-formatting language that describes a document in terms of its organization structure and content parts and their relationship.
GML markup or tags describe such parts as chapters, important sections and less important sections (by specifying heading levels), paragraphs, lists, tables, and so forth.
GML preceded and was an inspiration for the industry-developed Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), today's strategic set of rules for creating any structured document description language.

 GML — User Perspectives
GML, which is based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), is an open and non-proprietary specification used for the transport and storage of geographic information.
GML introduces an extraordinary flexibility by letting users define their own application schemas suitable for their own domains; however, this same flexibility also presents a substantial difficulty for writing GML software applications.
Since a GML user application schema is expressed through a W3C XML Schema document, a software component can perform type discovery on the schema to identify which XML elements from the GML dataset represent a feature, a feature’s properties, and a feature’s geometric properties.

One of the ugly truths of technology transfer is that developers tend to be grateful for research work when first received, and virtually oblivious to it by the end of a lengthy development cycle, which in those days could take years and years.
GML finally saw the light of day under its own name in 1973, shortly before the release of its first (relatively primitive) implementation in the "Advanced Text Management System" (ATMS).

In this and in other respects, a "GML document" does not resemble a simple XML document in other vocabularies--in which all the markup belongs to one namespace--but rather like one annotated, say, via RDF.
Rather than "pure" GML documents, therefore, what you tend to see are documents conforming to schemas which have themselves imported one or more of the over thirty schemas which constitute the bulk of the GML spec.
Note the intermingling of GML elements and attributes with those of the "base" application--and note especially that structurally, GML markup is subordinate to the other markup in this simple document.
