  TWG 3.0 - article: A Look at Gamist-Narrativist-Simulationist Theory
The ideas behind GNS Theory arose largely from discussions of RPG theory on the rec.games.frp.advocacy newsgroup, where a theory known as the Threefold Model was developed.
GNS Theory doesn’t draw a line between the gamemaster and the other players; in most games, the Director Stance is reserved for the gamemaster, but one of the advantages of GNS Theory is that it presents the possibility of designs where this is not the case.
In spite of the negative baggage that accompanies it, a more-than-cursory study of the GNS Theory is worthwhile.

 RPG Theory Glossary Entries:
Within GNS theory, this is a general term for play where everyon shares a focused priority on a single GNS mode or functional hybrid.
Hybrids of two GNS modes are widely well accepted as part of the GNS model, with The Riddle of Steel often being cited as an example.
In narrative theory terms, this is the circumstances of the main characters of a narrative.

A problem shared by all three folds of the theory is that the names of the folds all involve non-standard definition of the term.
GNS replaces "dramatist" with "narrativist." With simulation absorbing many plotting and story structure concerns, what is left appears to be essentially a definition of one basic stylistic approach to play, reducing its utility as a measure of general concern in play style.
The theory arose with the idea that individual in-game decisions are mapped and is thus sometimes claimed to extend no further than that use (note: a position held by the author for a long time).

The GNS Theory, as originally developed by Ron Edwards, holds that participants in role-playing games can be divided into three categories: Gamists, Narrativists, and Simulationists.
The theory developed out of the "Threefold Model" that appeared in the rec.games.frp.advocacy newsgroup in 1997 that defined Drama, Simulation, and Game as three paradigms of role-playing.
Strictly, GNS theory is concerned with gamers, but it has been extrapolated to direct game design.

Posted by: Jim Henley at May 24, 2004 1:33:26 PM Brian: I would put the blame for the "flame-potential" of the GNS model firmly on the RPG community, not on the model itself (which presents a sincere and to many people valuable approach for the analysis and design of roleplaying games).
GNS causes flame wars because people on both sides of the argument inject ego into the discussions.
So I happen to think the theory is practical, but even if it isn't for you, I question this blanket rejection of GNS as "metagaming" - now there's a term whose meaning has been pummeled into oblivion by gamers - or theorizing that isn't immediately practical.

As you note, the reason theory has been useful for us- is because we're learning to identify preference flags and what game we're playing- since most games do not do that for us.

I also think, given what I'm seeing in the numbers, that "how much is accomplished in the RPG Theory forum" is an unnecessarily fuzzy basis for congratulating Ron and Clinton on their decision.
