Maxima - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maxima is a free computer algebra system, written in Lisp and released under the GNU General Public License.
Maxima is based on Macsyma, which was developed at MIT with funding from the United States Department of Energy and other government agencies.
Maxima is a general-purpose system, and special calculations such as factorization of large numbers, manipulation of extremely large polynomials, etc. are often better done in specialized systems.

Maxima - A GPL CAS based on DOE-MACSYMA
Maxima is a descendant of DOE Macsyma, which had its origins in the late 1960s at MIT.
It was his efforts and skill which have made the survival of Maxima possible, and we are very grateful to him for volunteering his time and skill to keep the original Macsyma code alive and well.
Maxima itself is reasonably feature complete at this stage, with abilities such as symbolic integration, 3D plotting, and an ODE solver, but there is a lot of work yet to be done in terms of bug fixing, cleanup, and documentation.

Bill Schelter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
William Frederick Schelter (died July 30, 2001) was a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and a Lisp developer and programmer.
Schelter is credited with the development of GNU Common Lisp (gcl) implementation of Common Lisp and the GPL'd version of the computer algebra system Macsyma called GNU Maxima.
He is also credited with the first port of the GNU C compiler to the INTEL 386 architecture, used in the original implementation of the Linux kernel [1].

Talk:Maxima - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though Maxima is released under the GPL, it is not sponsored by GNU, so it is not correct to call it "GNU Maxima".
If Maxima can run on any POSIX-compliant OS, it should be capable of running on any of the WinNT line, sans Windows binaries.
But to answer your frustration: although Maxima does offer arbitrary-size integers and rationals, and also arbitrary-precision floats, it focusses primarily on symbolic functionality such as polynomial factorization.
