  LWN: An introduction to GNUnet
The GNUnet protocol attempts to make all traffic look the same, whether it is satisfying a request for information that resides locally or forwarding a request or response from another peer in the network.
GNUnet depends on content providers generating proper keywords for their content and nothing in the protocols stops malicious peers from generating valid query results for a multitude of keywords.
GNUnet is intended more for anonymous p2p file sharing (not interactive surfing), and aims for stronger anonymity.

 An introduction to GNUnet [LWN.net]
The GNUnet protocol attempts to make all traffic look the same, whether it is satisfying a request for information that resides locally or forwarding a request or response from another peer in the network.
When traffic is light, GNUnet will delay requests to accumulate enough traffic before sending to other peers making it difficult for external analysis to pin down which peers are communicating and what content is being transferred.
GNUnet depends on content providers generating proper keywords for their content and nothing in the protocols stops malicious peers from generating valid query results for a multitude of keywords.

 GNUnet FAQ
GNUnet is also free software and thus the source code is available, so you do not have to worry about being spied upon by the software.
A central goal for anonymous file-sharing in GNUnet is to make all users (peers) form a group and to make communications in that group anonymous, that is, nobody (but the initiator) should be able to tell which of the peers in the group originated the message.
The GNUnet encoding ensures that replies are always correct and can not be made up to earn trust without really contributing (see also the ECRS paper and the encoding page for details).

Freenet is very cool and has good minds working on it but I am concerned that they have bitten off more than they can chew, that design mistakes have been made, and that their choice of Java for a very complicated project is greatly complicating their lives and slowing down development.
GNUnet is written in C and has already achieved in a very short time similar levels of functionality and performance that Freenet has now while consuming far fewer machine resources.
Of interest to Bob La Quey and related to our discussion a couple weeks ago is that there is a section of the GNUnet white paper that discusses using GNUnet as a distributed backup system.

 Alternative GNUnet hostlist access
We are providing our gnunet hostlist so people can have a point of attachment to GNUnet when you′ve no friends running it.
For GNUnet 0.7 up, a new node can often be primed quicker this way, than by waiting for it to try the hostlists, which it is often conservative about to be gentle on them.
Usually when gnunet starts, it generates a public key in the hostcache from that and is then distributed to other nodes.
