GPE and Opie were two of those projects.
The GPE folks claim that the name GPE pre-dates hosting on handhelds.org and that the active project should be the one to hold the trademark, as all handhelds.org ever did was provide hosting services.
The GPE mailing list archives show no activity of consequence at handhelds.org since April whereas the LTG list is fairly active.

 Opie vs GPE - OpenZaurus
There is every chance of this changing quickly in the future, as GPE provides an interface for porting a larger subset of "standard" Linux apps than Opie does (which must use the Qt library).
GPE looks nice, and has potential, but currently is missing some core functionality that Opie has had for a while.
Bugs are pretty scarce in Opie compared to GPE which is a plus, but reporting a bug in an Opie app is futile as none of the developers will work on it.

This is a very Linux-like ToDo application for the GPE Palmtop Environment.
While we haven't actually seen the MAX interface, we would have to guess that ACCESS and PalmSource would be looking to replicate most of the look and feel of the traditional Palm platform, while still being able to leverage some of the newer developments in embedded Linux GUIs.

The GTK+ environment is rich and will be a breath of fresh air to anyone doing Linux GUI development today.
Unfortunately, developing in the GTK+ environment would require a considerable learning curve for traditional Palm OS coders to completely redesign their applications to run in the MAX/ALP environment, unless there was some sort of porting tool set available to facilitate the transition.

Another mobile environment that supports GTK+ -- the Nokia-sponsored Maemo project -- has already gained ports of core GPE applications, including gpe-todo, gpe-contacts, gpe-calendar, and gpe-mini-browser.
And, Boor notes that GPE was recently selected as "the default GUI application stack" for the fledgling EmbeddedUbuntu project.

opie-image.jffs2: an open-source fork of the Qtopia environment.
Choose either GPE or Opie images for a graphical interface or the bootstrap-image for a simple console interface.
Assuming all went well, you should have a working version of the OpenZaurus distribution with either the GPE Palmtop Environment (GPE) or the Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie).
