GNU General Public License - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
Developers that use the GNU GPL protect your rights with two steps: (1) assert copyright on the software, and (2) offer you this License giving you legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify it.
For both users' and authors' sake, the GPL requires that modified versions be marked as changed, so that their problems will not be attributed erroneously to authors of previous versions.
To prevent this, the GPL assures that patents cannot be used to render the program non-free.

GNU General Public License - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GPL was written by Richard Stallman for use with programs released as part of the GNU project.
However, the FSF does not hold the copyright for a work released under the GPL, unless an author explicitly assigns copyrights to the FSF (which seldom happens except for programs that are part of the GNU project.) Only the individual copyright holders have the authority to sue when a license violation takes place.
Critics of the GPL often describe it as being "viral", based on the GPL terms that all derived works must in turn be licensed under the GPL.

GPL Foolishness   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
GPL recreates the 1967 Formula 1 season (the last year before wings and cigarette advertising); what distinguishes it from all the other driving simulators is its astonishingly accurate and convincing physics model and the facility to race against other drivers via the internet.
GPL, as great as it is, is an extremely difficult game that literally sucks the life out of you.
Using changes in the GPL 'racing line' as braking points does not work when you are racing in heavy traffic because the cars ahead of you obscure your view of the line.

 BSD license vs. GPL
GPL is a mechanism that deprives the authors their freedom to make their code proprietary.
By authoring code that incorporates GPL code, I, as an author of the new code, is not free to release the new code under a GPL-incompatible license.
GPL is cool, but this is just not one of the reasons why it is so cool.

GPL to get a makeover - ZDNet UK Insight
GPL author Richard Stallman says he's working on amendments that could deal better with software patents; clarify how GPL software may be used in some networked environments and on carefully controlled hardware; and lower some barriers that today prevent the mixing of software covered by the GPL and other licences.
In the 13 years since the current GPL version two was released, the licence has moved from the fringes to the centre of the computing industry.
And the GPL could be better adapted to recent industry initiatives such as building sophisticated Web services on the Internet and boosting security through trusted computing methods.

What is GPL? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The most widespread use of GPL is in reference to the GNU GPL, which is commonly abbreviated simply as GPL when it is understood that the term refers to the GNU GPL.
One of the basic tenets of the GPL is that anyone who acquires the material must make it available to anyone else under the same licensing agreement.
A GPL is also referred to as a copyleft, in contrast to a copyright that identifies the proprietary rights of material.

Reciprocity and the GPL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The GPL has been enormously influential in creating a large public commons of software that is freely available to everyone worldwide.
The bargain created by the GPL can be paraphrased simply as follows: You may have this free software on condition that any derivative works that you create from it and distribute must be licensed to all under the same license.
This is the most powerful idea in the GPL and the one that has aroused the most passion in its adherents and its detractors.

 FSF - Licenses
The Apache Software License is incompatible with the GPL because it has a specific requirement that is not in the GPL: it has certain patent termination cases that the GPL does not require.
The primary incompatibility is that this Python license is governed by the laws of the "State of Virginia", in the USA, and the GPL does not permit this.
The GPL is not a member of that class, so the Jabber license does not permit relicensing under the GPL.

NewsForge | Why I love the GPL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
The GPL adds a magic glue to the Linux community, the good feeling that comes from doing good for others, and knowing that it will continue to do that good for as long as it is used.
The reason I love the GPL is because it has made one of the richest men in the world -- some would say that makes him one of the most powerful men in the world -- impotent against the surging growth of Linux and its user base.
The GPL is our check on any such company or person, and this is why I believe the GPL must continue to succeed and be used pervasively.

Make Your Open Source Software GPL-Compatible. Or Else.
SourceForge.net reported on November 10, 2003 that the GPL accounted for 71% of the 45,736 projects it hosted with OSI-approved open source licenses (next most popular were the LGPL, 10%, and the BSD licenses, 7%).
Paralegal Pamela Jones has written a another explanation of the GPL's legal basis for laymen; as both note, the GPL is a license, not a contract, which makes it unusually easy to enforce.
For example, the FSF developed the GPL and maintains a list of licenses that it believes to be compatible and not compatible with the GPL.

In addition, it is required that this code be obtained from internal company FTP server, rather than the Internet at large, so that it has been verified as not incorporating any company patents at the time it a snapshot is taken for the project for which you wish to use it.
Yes, the explicit purpose of the GPL is to hurt programmers' livelihoods.
Stallman does not care whether the programmers harmed by the GPL are working for Microsoft or trying to eke out an honest living despite Microsoft; he wishes to put all of them out of business.

The OpenSSL License and The GPL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.
There is some disagreement about what this exception means when the both the GPL program and the GPL incompatible library are shipped as part of the operating system.
Failing that, you could distribute the GPL program using OpenSSL but you are effectively trusting that the copyright holders for that program don't care.

 What are the licensing terms?
Most of the tools are covered by the GNU GPL, some are public domain, and others have a X11 style copyright.
To cover the GNU GPL requirements, the basic rule is if you give out any binaries, you must also make the source available.
In accordance with section 10 of the GPL, Red Hat permits programs whose sources are distributed under a license that complies with the Open Source definition to be linked with libcygwin.a/cygwin1.dll without libcygwin.a/cygwin1.dll itself causing the resulting program to be covered by the GNU GPL.

 Mozilla Relicensing FAQ
On the other hand, if they were to combine such Mozilla code with their own code and use the GPL licensing option offered for the Mozilla code under an MPL/GPL dual license, then they would have to distribute the resulting work under GPL terms, not LGPL terms.
Since the people in question presumably chose to use the LGPL (and not the GPL) for some reason important to them, it would be preferable to arrange the Mozilla licensing scheme so that they could include Mozilla code and still use the LGPL for the resulting works.
Such an application would have to be distributed as a whole under GPL terms, so the developer needs permission to distribute the Mozilla code under GPL terms as part of that overall application.

And while Davis and Turner's letter urges drafters of the plan to "explicitly reject" licenses that would discourage commercial adoption of technology, representatives from both congressmen's offices declined to say what licenses should be rejected.
Open-source advocates say this controversy is just one of the opening salvos in what they expect will become a major struggle to define the role of open-source and GPL software in the federal government.
Some divisions of the U.S. government already run Linux and open-source software, and federal research dollars are beginning to trickle into GPL projects like the National Security Agency-funded Security-Enhanced Linux project.

To install all current patches for GPL from Papyrus you need to download and install five separate patches and also carefully read six different "read me" instruction files to be able to add the text neccesary into the core.ini file for example.
So here's ONE single install that not only will install all the above five patches in the right order but also install a pre-edited core.ini with the proper default settings plus it makes GPL start in D3D mode instead of software mode so that doesn't have to be changed manually.
If you have manually edited your core.ini file these edits will be lost since this installer replaces it with the one included here.
