  GPMG
The GPMG was already being referred to as an LMG when used in the squad role, so the M249 light machine gun was designated SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon).
However, the GPMG is unlikely to disappear as a squad level weapon anytime in the near future.
Many of the GPMG designs in use are several decades old, and it may be time to examine if they can be made more effective.

FN MAG GPMG   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Commonly called the FN MAG 58, this epitome of the GPMG genre was the crowning achievement of FN's premier designer M. Ernest Vervier.
Too heavy as a SAW, the GPMG is too light for the sustained fire role without the heavy barrels that have never been manufactured.
That's a mistake, as the FN MAG 58's future is clearly in the form of the M240 coaxial vehicular machine gun.

Science Fair Projects - General-purpose machine gun
A general purpose machine gun or GPMG in concept is a compromise weapon, a machine gun intended to be capable of doing the tasks of a light machine gun, medium machine gun while at the same time being man-portable, but performance in either role may be inferior to a weapon specifically for that that role.
The modern GPMG is a medium machine gun which operates as a support weapon.
In the British Army the current GPMG is the L7 and in the US Army the M240 which are both versions of the FN MAG, FN Mitrailleuse d'Appui General (general purpose machine gun).

 Machineguns
Firing the GPMG while moving is pure stupidity (like what Rambo was doing) because it is inaccurate and easy to lose control of the weapon.
GPMG's are usually crew served but can be operated by on man. A crew usually consists of a team leader who directs the gun, the gunner who fires it and an assistant gunner who carries the tripod and extra ammo.
GPMG's are usually belt fed. Belts can be linked together but it is usually impractical to do this unless the weapon is stationary and will not be moving.

NZ Army - Mags on NZLAVs
While the trainee artillery officers calculated their coordinates – and then recalculated them – artillery shells began landing on the hillside in front, and the MAG 58 Platt-mounts and coax guns opened up with supporting fire, the red tracer bullets curving through the snow-laden air as they found their target 1,500 metres away.
While the new gun looks exactly the same as the old GPMG externally, its gas piston is of an improved design, so that the “balancing drill” (test-firing to adjust the rate of fire) is no longer needed.
The weapon was known in New Zealand as the “GPMG” or the “Gimpy” – what American soldiers were also calling their M60 general purpose machine gun.

One thing that was a bastard with the gpmg was swapping the barrel when some tosser had been happy on the trigger and blown it.
Having carried and used both my loyalty was to the gpmg, yes she could be a cantankerous old cow, she was overweight and ate like a pig but she was loyal and dependable.
For a gpmg it was to accurate with the gunner often aiming into one soldier rather than the group but it wasn't such a pig nore a bastard to carry....especially when some barmy bastard decided to bring along the tripod!

The General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) can be used either as a light weapon, mounted on a bipod, or it can be used in a sustained fire role, mounted on a tripod and fitted with the C2 optical sight.

China Defence Today Forum - Type 88 GPMG
The 5.8 round used by the GPMG is a heavier round, different from the standard round used by assault rifles.
Replace the infantry GPMG with type 88 for possibly up to company level for a few reason.
The Smaller and lower weight mean easier and quicker to move around in the battle field and reposition it self in the optimum position to give support/suppress fire-support which is helpful during an assult, the small round mean more ammo increase the amount of fire mission.

The AAT-52 (and its descendant, the AAT-F1) tend to operate on the edge of safety due to the design, yet it has served for over half a century, and is still France’s standard GPMG and is also used on French vehicles of all types.
The AAT-52 is sort of a "Frankenweapon;" the operation is a modification of the Spanish CETME rifle, and the belt feed is a modified version of the German MG-42.
The AAT-52 still equips some reserve French forces as well as being the primary GPMG of several former African colonies of the French, though many countries which were using the AAT-52 replaced of modified them into what were effectively AAT-F1 equivalents in the 1990s.
