	GRP Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		GRP Records is an American jazz record company that was founded in New York by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen in 1982.
		For most of the 1990s, GRP was in charge of MCA's (soon to be renamed Universal Music Group) jazz operations.
		After the mega merger with PolyGram, GRP became part of the Verve Music Group and was relegated to being a smooth jazz label, at the same time incorporating the catalog from the deactivated Verve Forecast label that was a part of PolyGram.

	The Grusin / Rosen Story
		We had our GRP Records and we needed more product and I thought these were very very talented new young artists doing their own thing their own way and so I released both of those records in the United States.
		We mixed those records to the style that we wanted to and we mixed them to a digital format and kind of changed around, edited and re-edited the music where we felt could be tightened up and work better.
		After that record we made a decision, Dave and I, that we are gonna go in a direction of music and that's gonna be the common denominater and not necessarily what the market happens to be, what's popular at the moment, we're gonna do that with our artists.

	GRP RECORDS
		Twenty years ago, composer/keyboardist Dave Grusin and producer Larry Rosen launched GRP Records as an independent outgrowth of the contemporary jazz projects that they had collaborated on and cut for GRP when it was an Arista Records imprint.
		Their label was one of the first to embrace the then-new digital recording technology, and the label quickly established itself as a major force in the jazz world, even though many mainstream and progressive jazz types decried the label's focus on “commercial” sounds — the age-old jazz debate.
		Though GRP's catalog is quite diverse, spanning new age to traditional mainstream jazz, for this special collection, the emphasis was on the label's hit contemporary-jazz material.

	David Benoit - GRP Records
		He pioneered the popular smooth jazz sound in the ‘80s, and continues to attract fans, critical acclaim and the most coveted awards in the music industry with his straight-ahead jazz recordings, his television and film scores, and his classical compositions.
		“This record is still smooth jazz,”; says Benoit, “but I wanted to stretch things a bit this time, do something a little different.” Case in point: his inspired choice for opening cut, Herbie Hancock’s classically funky “Watermelon Man,” which he flavors with an unmistakable Ramsey Lewis retro-60s piano feel.

	Gift : Music
		Probably the world´s most prolific studio guitarist, Carlton´s records have been, for the most part, slickly-produced affairs containing at least a two or three catchy originals, a combination that has earned him a couple of Grammies.
		Records like "The Gift" try so hard to please a wide audience that he tends to dilute his talents to the lowest common denominator, probably a curse for a sessionist who made a good living adapting his style for what each song calls for instead of vice versa.
		Fans from the seventies and early-eighties period will be hard-pressed to find his old trademark Gibson ES335 sound here, but I´m pretty sure he took it out of the attic for "My Old Town", with a solo lifted almost straight out of the old Crusaders tune "Lillies of the Nile".

		Aspen is far and away my favorite Ripps track of all time, which is a bold statement when you consider the various gems the Ripps have produced over the years.
