Bootloader - The GNU Mach Reference Manual
Many hardware architectures have a very simple startup routine which reads a very simple bootloader from the beginning of the internal hard disk, then transfers control to it.
GNU Mach conforms to the Multiboot specification which defines an interface between the bootloader and the components that run very early at startup.
After the bootloader loaded the kernel image to a designated address in the system memory, it jumps into the startup code of the kernel.

In Computing, the GRand Unified Bootloader is a multiboot boot loader which is most commonly used to allow Dual booting of two or more operating systems installed on a single computer.
In technical terms, a multiboot boot loader is one which can load any executable file with a multiboot header present in the first 8 kilobyte of the file.
The GRand Unified Bootloader can also be installed to a floppy disk.

GRUB is an attempt to produce a bootloader for IBM PC-compatible machines that has both the capability to be friendly to beginning or otherwise non-technically interested users and the flexibility to help experts in diverse environments.
This project actually started because we wanted to boot the GNU HURD operating system on top of Mach4 on an IBM PC-compatible system in a manner compliant with the Multiboot Standard, which was put together as a general solution to the problem of the different boot formats and the functionality they need.
The name comes from the acronym, but also from the realization that although a grub is one of the smaller (and less interesting) critters - barely worthy of notice - it is nearly ubiquitous and vital to the order of things.

 Restoring GRUB on a dual-boot Windows/Linux system
BIOS loads this bootloader program, and then that bootloader begins the process of loading the operating system (perhaps directly, or perhaps loading up another intermediary stage, with more options).
However, it's able to use the rest of the drive space to hold more elaborate programs, allowing you change the way the system boots, in a variety of ways; and because it's a program on the disk drive, it can be updated, as needed, to suit the changes in disk drive technology.
The average PC is running a Microsoft operating system, and their bootloader is very limited (deliberately, to some degree), and (usually) only one operating system is supported (theirs).

However, Alan Cox told in a linux-kernel thread that this feature of the linux kernel will be removed sooner or later, you thus will have to use a bootloader even on floppies some day.

Upon completion, the BIOS loads the initial bootstrap software (that is, the bootloader) from the configured boot device and hands control over to the bootloader.

It is possible to write an MBR+ext2 bootloader for x86 that boots a kernel and initrd by name lookup in the root filesystem, and resides entirely in the (512-64-n) bytes of the MBR plus the 1KB boot block of a minimal ext2/ext3 filesystem.

Much like the LILO bootloader discussed in the previous section, GRUB, or the GRand Unified Bootloader, is a bootloader that provides boot selection for any number of Linux kernel revisions and other operating system variants.
This isn't likely to be a problem in traditional office environments, but if you operate a public kiosk that gathers user data, or some other publically available system, it is worth devoting some time to considering the many ways in which an attacker could obtain access to your data.
It is not required to be on the same disk or partition as the GRUB bootloader, but it must be contained on a disk and filesystem type that GRUB is able to access.

Anyone with physical access to your machine can bypass all passwords to gain entry to your hard disk with one simple command given to the bootloader.
Fortunately, the popular GRand Unified Bootloader (GRUB) is equipped with security features to prevent such an 'attack.' It can password protect each entry of your boot menu.
The other popular bootloader, LInux Loader or LILO, also allows users to boot into single-user mode, and it too has a password protection feature.
