Aerospace Technology - Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)
The most vital part of the GSLV rocket is the Russian cryogenic engine which is a major addition to Indian capabilities.
The first launch of the GSLV is India's fifteenth satellite launch mission and its tenth successful one.
The cryogenic engines used by GSLV are the result of a major collaboration with Russia starting in 1991.

The payload is 573 pounds (260 kilograms) heavier than the one launched on the first GSLV flight in April 2001 at Sriharikota island off the east coast, 68 miles (110 kilometers) north of Chennai.
The performance data of the GSLV was telemetered to the ground stations in Sriharikota, Port Blair and stations at Brunei and Biak in Indonesia which were networked with SHAR Centre.
GSLV is the most technologically challenging project undertaken so far under the Indian space programme.

GSLV Launch Helps Move India Closer To Self-Reliance in Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Krishnamurthi said the latest launch represents "a significant step forward in operationalizing the GSLV." The GSLV will be declared operational after one more successful flight, with the next mission scheduled for sometime next year, he said.
In its present configuration, the three-stage GSLV is 49 meters tall and weighs 414 metric tons at liftoff.
While the GSLV launch was a significant milestone in India’s bid for self-reliance in space, the commercial prospects for the vehicle are bleak due to its relatively low payload capacity and the depressed state of the commercial satellite market.

The launch of the GSLV was earlier aborted moments before takeoff on March 28 this year due to a malfunctioning fuel system.
Like it has happened with each of the previous categories of launchers, the first test of the GSLV series on March 28 also faced hitches and was aborted in the last few seconds, when the computerized automatic safety system came into play and shut down the launch procedures.
ISRO scientists say the GSLV test is the "most technologically challenging test undertaken so far" by the space agency as a cryogenic engine acquired from Russia has been used for the first time.

The different stages of GSLV are connected by inter-stage structures, which also house the necessary avionics and control systems for controlling the lower stage till it is separated.
In addition to the cryogenic stage, the other major new elements in GSLV, are the liquid strap-on stages, a heat shield with larger diameter than PSLV (3.4 m compared to 3.2 m in PSLV) and the vented inter-stage between first and second stage.
GSLV consists of hundreds of sub-systems, which are designed, manufactured, tested and qualified before the integration for launch.

The development and launch of the GSLV rocket is a priority item in the 20-year Indian national space programme aimed at creating a dense satellite network to meet the country's requirements for telecommunications, Earth sounding, environmental monitoring and other systems, as well as India's entrance to the international market of space.
Even though the initial flight of the GSLV would be using a Russian cryogenic engine, the second or the third flight in 2001 or in 2002 would use the Indian-built CUSP (Cryogenic Upper Stage Project) engine.
The repeatedly postponed launching of the GSLV with a cryogenic accelerating block was scheduled for September 1999.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | Second GSLV rocket launched
The GSLV is the cornerstone in the Indian Space Research Organization's aspirations to have a "self-reliant" space program, where satellites are both built and launched from Indian soil.
It is currently planned that the GSLV will have to chalk up at least three qualification flights before being entrusted to launch a fully operational satellite, and ISRO's plans for a lunar mission later this decade will require the use of a GSLV rocket.
ISRO is also planning a third-generation version of the GSLV that could as much as double payload capacity in as little as six years using a new design, the Indian space program said in its most recent annual report.

The GSLV is a three-stage vehicle, with the first stage supplemented by four liquid-propellant strap-on boosters.
The introduction of the GSLV means that India no longer has to rely upon foreign launchers to place communications and remote sensing satellites into geosynchronous orbits.
However, whether the GSLV will ever become a viable commercial launch vehicle is open to question; there are already sufficient launch vehicles available for such work without a newcomer entering the marketplace.

Faulty gadget brought down GSLV : HindustanTimes.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
A defective fuel-control device has been identified as the rogue component that propelled the GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle), with Insat-4C communications satellite on board, off course and into the Bay of Bengal seconds after liftoff on July 10.
They have said that the flawed gadget, on board one of the four strap-on boosters of GSLV F02, let in more propellant than required into the engine, setting off a chain reaction that resulted in erratic propulsion.
According to the sources, the experts declared the GSLV's design "robust" and felt there was no need for a complete review of the rocket.
