GTIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Using the GTIA is as simple as using the CTIA.
The GTIA is fully supported by the Operating System, and all the commands and utilities that run with the CTIA can be used with the GTIA, except you now have more colors available to you.
GTIA programs can be used on CTIA equipped machines, but will suffer color simplification and some shifting (e.g.

 GTIA - Wikipedia

The GTIA expands this to use all nine color registers or 16 hues with one luminance or 16 luminances of one hue in a static display.
GTIA is fully upward compatible with the CTIA and all software that runs on a CTIA system will run the same way on a system with GTIA.
The GTIA graphics modes are fully supported by the OS and all graphics commands and utilities that run in the CTIA modes can be used in GTIA modes.

Window on GTIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The GTIA chip offers three modes which allow up to nine arbitrary colors, 16 shades of one hue, or 15 hues of one luminance plus fl.
The real power of the GTIA, however, is that each and every point in the GTIA modes can be set to any of the available colors.
Note that the display list is the same for all three GTIA modes and for Mode 8, except for the fact that the GTIA modes do not normally support the text window.

ANTIC directly controls most of GTIA's operations, but the 6502 can be programmed to intercede and control some or all of GTIA's functions.
GTIA converts the digital commands from ANTIC (or the 6502) into the signal that goes to the television.
GTIA also adds some factors of its own, such as color values, player-missile graphics, and collision detection.

As the serial data of the different object pass through the GTIA, it is "impressed" with the color and luminance values in these registers.
Priority is assigned to each object by the GTIA chip before the serial data from each object are combined with the other chip before the serial data from each object are combined with the other objects and sent out to the TV screen.
There are two versions of the GTIA: The NTSC (United States TV standard) and PAL (one of the European TV standards).

You only need a GTIA for all modes the only difference is that you can’t use the GTIA modes with the basic command GR.
GTIA had 256 color pallete and the 16 color mode in 9,10,11 - CTIA didnt really have much for those modes IIRC.
GTIA has no problem with 16 luminances and the control for 16 luminances is still there.

 CTIA / GTIA Registers
GTIA modes are normally only used with ANTIC's luminance-only graphics mode (F).
This means that in GTIA mode 2, a pixel value of 3 has the same priority as player 3, and a pixel value of C has the same priority as playfield 0 (color 1 in normal color modes).
While it's clear that CTIA or GTIA is solely responsible for all video output to the television, it is unclear how this chip interacts with ANTIC.

The GTIA is an extension of the older CTIA, and was mostly backwards compatible.
The GTIA can deliver a maximum of 256 colours to the display: 16 different colour hues, each with 16 different levels of brightness.
As for the 80x192x16 shade mode: ‘In GTIA mode nine, you have 16 different luminances of the same hue.’ [This is combined] with 16 hues for a total of 256 colours colours.

Atari 8-bit family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For example, the GTIA used a series of registers to select colors for the screen; these colors could be changed by inserting the correct values into its registers, which were mapped into "memory" that was visible to the 6502.
The CTIA chip was replaced with the GTIA in later revisions of the 400 and 800 and all other members of the Atari 8-bit family.
GTIA output them as separate digital luminance and chrominance signals, which were mixed to form an analogue composite video signal.

Además, debido a las diferencias en cómo el CTIA y el GTIA interactuaban con el televisor, los programas que dependían de los artificios de color {en inglés: color artifacts} se desplegaban de forma diferente.

These chips were designed by Atari engineers primarily to take much of the burden of housekeeping off of the 6502, thereby freeing the 6502 to concentrate on computations.
The PAL GTIA is used in France and the Lum outputs are run into an onboard encoder to produce a "psudo" color depending on the Luminance output, composite only.

 Page 6 - Issue 2 - GTIA Modes
When the basic Manuals were written the Atari computers were capable of only 9 graphics modes (Modes 0 to 8) available directly from Basic.
With the introduction of the GTIA (George's Television Interface Adaptor) chip to replace the old CTIA chip, the computers now have the added facility of Graphics Modes 9, 10 and 11.
This fact is reasonably well publicised but there's not a lot of literature around to tell you how to use these modes.

It's limited to 30 (shades from 0 to 14.5, every 0.5), but you can't freely use all the 30 shades, because average amount of information about single pixel is 3.5 bits (GTIA mode 9 is 4-bit, mode 10 is 3-bit).
Conversion of shades to HIP can be problematic, but a simple and giving good results method is taking shade of every second pixel (starting from the first) for mode 9, and the other pixels' for mode 10.
We code GTIA 9 shades on 4 bits and in mode 10 we ignore the lowest bit.

Well, GTIA gives us three extra graphics modes which we can use to get many more colors on the screen than usual.
By the way, if you try to use a GTIA program on a CTIA machine, it will run fine as long as it doesn't use the GTIA modes (with the exception of the artifacting problem).
