  Information security battle will require tough choices
GTISC researchers and others are now hopeful that consumer demand will boost efforts to solve myriad issues in the field.
While GTISC and other researchers address the complexity of this design challenge, beleaguered computer users are beginning to favor security and reliability over features and pricing, Merkle says.
Merkle believes GTISC researchers will make significant contributions to solving the range of information security problems because of their level of expertise and the cross-disciplinary approach they are taking.

On the morning of Jan. 18, the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) in the College of Computing organized the first GTISC Security Summit at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center in Technology Square.
Addressed by Orson Swindle, commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the main aim of the summit was to examine growing information security issues and to highlight what the government and the IT industry are doing to curb spam and spyware.
Currently there are no plans for this summit to be held at other higher institutions but GTISC hopes that other institutions will do so, since spam and spyware affect so many people.

The Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) hosted the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Security Summit, which examined security challenges associated with technology.
More than 250 corporate executives, industry leaders and technologists from across the country attended the VoIP Security Summit, which was held in conjunction with the second annual Tom E. Noonan Distinguished Lecture on Information Security, delivered by Reed Hundt, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and senior adviser to McKinsey and Co.
A panel discussion later debated how security will impact low service costs currently associated with VoIP, role of public policy and regulation in leading security efforts, and whether security needs will be addressed before a major incident affects the network.

This bill, which will help protect Georgia's Internet users from spam, was signed by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue this morning in Georgia Tech's main library at a ceremony attended by representatives from GTISC, EarthLink, the Georgia State Legislature and the university's students.
