GTR (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GTR was a supergroup founded in 1986 by ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett and Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe.
GTR were notable for attempting to create a band with guitar and synthesizer sounds, but without the use of conventional keyboard synths, using guitar-based synthesizers instead.
GTR's only studio album, a self-titled LP produced by Geoffrey Downes of Asia, released by Arista Records, went gold and spawned a hit single, "When the Heart Rules the Mind", which stayed in the charts for 16 weeks [1].

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by melodic rock band GTR Greatest Hits Live featuring Steve Howe and Steve Hackett
GTR were that pretty sparse commodity in the late eighties - "a melodic rock superband".

And unlike Yes and Genesis, GTR has no full-time keyboardist – no one to steal the spotlight from the Two Steves by slipping into a white cape, à la Rick Wakeman, and dazzling the fans with his tresses and his cadenzas.
GTR also hired a ringer – songwriter-producer Geoff Downes of Asia –; to give the arrangements the requisite keyboard flavor with a minimal amount of keyboard playing.
GTR is sure to hit the bull's-eye, for Downes and the Two Steves evidently have worked themselves pallid getting their songs to sound big and chartworthy.

The band decided to fire Scott, and in a move that wasn't very nice to either Scott or Mike, Mike got the job of informing him that he was out, simply because everyone else seemed to 'vanish' into thin air during the supposed moment.

It seems that the band knew that this was to be the first single off the album and when hearing the track one gets the feeling that this is the track on which they try hardest.
The album is a strong indication of the power and virtuosity this band possessed and which was not truly reflected on the debut album.
The sound of the band on this album further reaffirms my belief that the main flaw with the GTR debut album was in its production which came across as being too polished for the guitar work of Hackett and Howe.

However, when their label went bankrupt, the still unreleased album was scrapped and the band eventually became a casualty breaking up fairly shortly thereafter.
Originally they wanted to call the band Yes, but bassist Chris Squire owned the rights to that name, so they went with the simplicity of their four last names and Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe was formed.

Steve Hackett and Steve Howe -- lead guitarists for the prime periods of Genesis and Yes, respectively -- formed the band in 1986, not with the intention of reviving classic prog rock, but with the idea of making a stadium-shaking hard rock band.
And, GTR 's lone eponymous album didn't deliver the fireworks that Howe and Hackett fans desired.
There are glimmers of what might have been -- what GTR could have done if they dropped their crossover ambitions -- but as it stands, GTR marks the point in time when both Howe and Hackett took one last stab at commercially oriented rock, before turning toward more ambitious solo projects.

For those who saw Hackett perform with his new band on the 2001/02 tours, telling you that the chemistry between the players on this record is extremely strong will come as no surprise.
To the commercial public, GTR was a welcomed breath of fresh air - an album with solid musicianship and catchy songwriting saturated into a hybrid of '80s pop music meshed with minorly audible progressive influences.
While history has since reported that the band's personal chemistry had already significantly deteriorated by this point in the summer of 1986, it certainly is not evident on the performance featured here.
