The GUGB was removed from the NKVD and renamed Peoples Commissariat of State Security or NKGB.
By the end of 1937 GUGB was one of the most powerful and influential organs in NKVD structure.
Next chief of GUGB from April 15 1937 to September 8 1938 was komkor Mikhail Frinovsky, he was succeeded by Lavrenty Beria, then just promoted to Commissar 1st rank of State Security.

In 1934, OGPU was incorporated into newly-created NKVD of the USSR, becoming Main Directorate for State Security (GUGB); NKVD of the Russian SFSR ceased to exist and was not resurrected until 1946 (as MVD of the RSFSR).
As a result, NKVD also became responsible for all detention facilities (including the forced labor camps, known as the Gulag) as well as for the regular police.

Interestingly, all types of tunics were piped at collar and cuff with silver or gold embroidery instead of the more usual coloured piping seen on every other previous state security or RKKA uniform.
Silver embroidery was used for all NKVD GUGB officer uniforms (including the Sergeant of State Security which was really an officer rank).
Note the special oval state security (GUGB) sleeve patch introduced for the M35 uniforms and used for the M37 uniforms and the silver piped red cloth rank stars which only appeared on M35 GUGB uniforms.
