Topic: GUPPY IA

Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GUPPY II conversion (SCB 47), implemented from 1947 to 1951, was generally similar to the GUPPY I, except for the retention of both periscopes and the introduction of the recently perfected snorkel.
Running from 1952 through 1954, the GUPPY IIA conversion (SCB 47C) was very similar to the preceding GUPPY IA. These boats retained the Sargo II battery configuration.
GUPPY IB was an informal designation for a limited upgrade and modernization given to four boats for transfer to foreign navies.

The GUPPY II conversion, from 1947 to 1951, was generally similar to the GUPPY I except for the sail.
The GUPPY IB program, from 1953 to 1955, was another interim conversion that converted four boats for transfer to foreign navies.
From 1959 to 1963, this problem was addressed by selecting boats that already had completed most GUPPY II conversion work and were in good condition, cutting them in half, and adding a 15 foot (4.6 m) section forward of the control room to create room for new sonar equipment.

 GUPPY
Most notably, the surface-ship-like sharp V-shaped "fleet boat bow" was replaced with a distinctive rounded "guppy bow" (which housed sonar hydrophones in a "chin mount"), and an SV-radar screen was added to the top of the sail, creating a distinctive side bulge.
GUPPY IIA boats had the same outward appearance as GUPPY II, except the IIA had only three diesel exhaust outlets and the II had four.
Certain boats, which already had the majority of the Guppy conversion work done (already Guppy II) and were in decent condition, were taken into the shipyard from 1959 to 1963, cut in half and lengthened with a new 15 foot section.

The first to undergo these modernization's, USS ODAX (SS 484) and USS Pomodon (SS 486) were intended to serve as captive target submarines so that the antisubmarine forces could learn to cope with the advanced types being developed by the Germans at the end of the war.
Almost immediately after these conversions, the GUPPY II program commenced, which added the installation of a snorkel system that allowed the diesel engines to be operated while the boat was at periscope depth.
This conversion was similar to the GUPPY II, but the equipment updates and re-arrangements were not as drastic.

USS Sea Robin (SS-407) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From September through November, she was engaged in her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
In 1951, Sea Robin was converted to a GUPPY IA submarine, following which she returned to New London for local operations.
In January and February 1952, the submarine participated in Exercise “Micowex” in the North Atlantic testing cold weather gear and procedures under the supervision of the Naval Research Laboratory, New London, followed by a return to warmer waters and participation in Exercise “Pacex” in the Caribbean.

USS Razorback and the GUPPY Program
The GUPPY program increased the number of battery cells in each submarine with some later boats receiving improved batteries that provided even more power per cell.
The GUPPY program added a wide variety of sensors, including better sonars, better electronic warfare systems, and even new fire control systems in the later boats.
Furthermore, she is one of only two GUPPY submarines to have had her hull reinforced so she could act as a live target for torpedo tests, a role Razorback would fulfill regularly during her career.

 USS Trutta (SS-421) - SHIP'S HISTORY
Their performance was so nearly equal to that of the Balao Class that neither design can be said to have been superior to the other in basic characteristics.
Following her GUPPY IIA conversion at the Charleston Naval Shipyard at Charleston, South Carolina, the submarine was recommissioned on 2 January 1953 and joined Submarine Squadron 4 at the United States Naval Station at Key West, Florida.
Ten years later, as the fleet snorkel types neared the end of their useful service lives, they were replaced by a mixed lot of more modern submarines--seven GUPPY IIAs, one GUPPY IA, and two GUPPY IIIs--retired from the United States Submarine Force between 1970 and 1973.

Jim Christley has conducted extensive research on the GUPPY program and most of the information contained here is the result of his tireless efforts.  Jim writes that after the war the Navy obtained two German Type XXI boats.  These were studied and tested extensively.
   A history of events leading up to the Guppy conversions indicates the following:  According to Christley's article, "Why is there a "Y" in GUPPY?" the two German Boats studied were the U-2513 and U-3008. ;
Included in this site is a section for each of the Guppy classes.  You can check back on the opening page for a link to each class.  There were seven major conversion types:  The Guppy I, Guppy IA, Guppy IB, Guppy II, Guppy IIA, Guppy III, and the Fleet Snorkel.
