The setting for Prime Directive is sourced from the original sixties Star Trek series, with additional elements from the seventies cartoon, before going its very independent way, by increasing the involvement of the Gorn and the Tholians, as well as adding a slew of their own new species.
That said, neither the original Prime Directive game nor this version can be said to be specifically aimed at Star Trek fans in general, but are instead targeting devotees of the Star Fleet Battles game who wish to add a roleplaying element to their campaigns.
Yet the GURPS rules are inherently flexible in both their mechanics and their outlook, and hopefully this flexibility can be applied to the Star Fleet Battles universe.

Rules for "prime teams", special groups of highly trained operatives that figured prominently in the original Prime Directive, but are a bit glossed over here.
Gurps fans might also be disappointed since there are no sidebars.
But after seeing sidebars in 15 Gazillion supplements, Gurps fans are used to them.) There's a good deal of space questionably used (the medals, the pages that describe other SFB products, the free trader deck plans) that probably should have been used to expand either the rules or the background.

The move to GURPS also allowed some cross-genre moves to be made, and to include some limited elements of the Traveller Universe.
Originally GURPS Prime Directive,the GURPS Klingons imperial source book and GURPS Module Prime Alpha module were released under the third editon of GURPS, which required reworkings of GPD and GK once Steve Jackson Games developed GURPS 4th Edition.
It has been announced that versions of Prime Directive and the related sourcebooks will be released from 2005 on for the popular D20 and D6 roleplay stystems in order to further expand the potential user base for the roleplay aspect of the Star Fleet Universe.

GPD is pretty close to Classic Trek, and if you're going to lament the fact that you can't see a character named "Kirk" as the captain of a GPD ship, you really need to get a little more creative.
G:PD appears to deliver TOS goodness in a slightly grittier vein, which is a good thing, IMHO.

For GURPS Prime Directive, the same thing occurs as the authors simplified the more complex psionic rules of the Core set and added more skills and quirks.
Of course, for diehard fans that find the notion of an alternate Star Trek universe appealing, GURPS Prime Directive is an adequate game built on some of the founding notions of the original series.
Granted, the authors have fiddled with the GURPS to enhance (or detract from) the game, but the effort is limited and doesn't spoil the mechanics that are trim and functional.

 Prime Directive Adpation - HERO GAMES Discussion Boards
I have created an adaptation of Prime Directive (mostly based on the first edition rules) for Hero.
Its been years since I looked at Prime Directive, in fact I think that I sold all of the original stuff.
While I'm beginning to come to a similar conclusion about GURPS, I'd recommend the GURPS Prime Directive line for the background material on the Star Fleet Battles version of the Trek universe.

Prime Directive HERO would certainly make a nifty entry level standalone product.
The fact that it took several months for Steve Jackson to review GURPS Prime Directive 4E for approval, might have had a little to do with it as well.

GURPS Romulans and GURPS Module Prime Beta are in the works.
Weapons conversions depend on information from the new version of GURPS Ultra-Tech, we just want to make sure that they are compatable with UT. Since I did most of the racial conversions I think most of the current weapon stats should work without many changes.
According to a statment on ADBs disscussion board the changes for G4E were extensive enough they need to start over and rerelease GURPS Prime Directive and GURPS Klingons, they are currently planning on a January release date.

I picked up the GURPS: Prime Directive book a while back because I had heard their license allowed for the use of material from Star Trek: TAS.
GPD has two options for starship combat; first is to use the SFB rules, for which they provide a section on character roles that allow a character's skills to affect the ship's performance (the engineer can give you more power, the communications officer can decrypt enemy codes, and so on).
So far as adventures go, the GURPS versions of the PD rulebook and the Klingons book each have an adventure in them (as well as a bunch of adventure seeds in the setting info), but I'd be somewhat surprised if PD sold well enough to justify publishing any as standalone products.

I've played with it a few times, found myself TL13ing the > powerplant and TL11ing most everything else, and still not able to get > in a good balance for impulse vs. warp, weapons vs. deflector shields, > particularly with respect to relative space/weight.
There is not now, nor is there every likely to be a book named "GURPS: Star Trek" and SJGames has no such rights.
What there is is GURPS Prime Directive which is not published by SJGames and covers the "Star Fleet Universe" rather than Star Trek itself.

Currently, there is an unofficial Star Trek sourcebook for Steve Jackson Games' GURPS available on the Web; there is the old Star Fleet Battles-based Prime Directive RPG from Task Force Games/Amarillo Design Bureau; and there is the current GURPS Prime Directive from SJG.
Prime Directive, being based on the Star Fleet battles universe, diverges wildly from Star Trek, most notably in its very militaristic tone.
GURPS Prime Directive suffers from both these problems.
