 Great Western 'County' class
It was said that F. Hawksworth, who designed the 'County' locomotives, intended the class to be an evolution of the 'Hall' class with 4 row superheaters.
Initially the class would be numbered from 9900 but this was altered before assembly of the first locomotive.
The power classification of the 'County' class was 6-MT, the G.W.R. power class was D and the route availability was RED.

 Great Western Railway Star class
One difference in North Star compared to the rest of the 'Star'; class was that the footplate was built 2½ inches higher and even when this engine was rebuilt in a 'Castle'; class locomotive, the footplate kept the non-standard height.
4000 North Star and 4003 Lode Star were fitted with the new audible signalling equipment in 1908 in connection with the first installation of Automatic Train Control between Slough and Reading.
From 1932, the upper lamp irons were transferred from the front of the chimney to the smokebox door while from 1939, some members of the class received the Grange type of shorter chimney, 1 foot 9 inches high compared to the previous 1 foot 11¾ inches.

From charts supplied by his GWR opposite number, Mr Nicholls, Stemp saw that the GWR 2-8-0 regularly took 28 loaded wagons over the 9 miles 22 chains between Lostwithiel and Doublebois, where the ruling gradient was 1 in 58, in 29 minutes.
This class is interesting in that 3440 City of Truro may have been the first British locomotive to reach 100 mile/h and possibly on the strength of this is preserved as part of the NRM Collection.
Class emerged in 1936, and is probably better known as the 90xx class (renumbered in 1946).

No 3850 was one of the last batch of twenty three '2884' Class locomotives built, being turned out from Swindon on June 16 1942, at a cost of £7,911, and painted in wartime fl livery.
Alot of interest was shown in the appeal - the prospect of a GWR tender engine on the WSR stimulating the imagination - and sufficient funds were raised to enable No 3850, the chosen locomotive, to be purchased on February 26 1984.
Meanwhile, as no suitable tender was available, a separate deal with British Rail resulted in an ex- GWR 4000 gallon high-sided tender being purchased for the locomotive, which was originally paired with 'Castle' Class 4-6-0 No 5004 Llanstephan Castle.

An enlarged version of the design was introduced in 1923, this was the Castle Class locomotive, of which about 170 were constructed, including some rebuilds from the 'Star' class.
Note: The GWR had previously built another class of locomotives which carried the same names, the Star Class, but these were completely different in design.

 Maunsell N class 2-6-0
In the photograph above N class A816 is seen fitted with a new funnel, and below she is shown many years later, in her British Railways guise, at Redhill.
The N class was designed by Richard Maunsell, CME of the SECR, to be a modern powerful mixed traffic locomotive to replace the regular double heading undertaken by smaller and older loco classes.
Southern fans need to be uncomfortably aware that this design was heavily influenced by GWR thinking, due to the recruitment by the SECR of Harry Holcroft from Swindon.

A shuttle operated on the main road that lead to the rail network, with the various locomotives taking turns moving (via push and pull procedure) the passenger loaded stock to the track end and back again.
