 Cover version - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An extreme example of punk cover versions is the punk tribute band Gabba, who mix the songs of ABBA and The Ramones.
Popular musicians may play covers as a tribute to the original performer or group, to win audiences who like to hear a familiar song, or to increase their chance of success by using a proven hit or to gain credibility by its comparison with the original song.
More rarely, bands will do an entire album of cover songs originally by a particular artist, such as The The's Hanky Panky, which consists entirely of Hank Williams songs, or Booker T. and the MGs' album McElmore Avenue which was a cover of The Beatles' Abbey Road.

The Georgia Allman Brothers Band Association (GABBA) has recently replaced the angels at the foot of Berry and Duane’s graves, stolen by overzealous fans.
Berry’s band was playing the warm-up show for them at Westwood Junior High in Park Forest, Illinois when he found out about the impending departure of their bass player, and volunteered to take his place.
Berry was the unspoken leader after Duane passed and used to love to hold court at huge dinners in the ample dining room.

GABBA grew out of these individual efforts to show respect for Duane and Berry to saving and preserving local Georgia monuments and mementos that had a part in the early formation of what would continue 30 years later with the Allman Brothers Band.
In the late 80's, individual fans of the Allman Brothers Band found that they were visiting the gravesites of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley.
The desire to show Duane and Berry that they had not been forgotten grew into showing that same respect to all of the people who have been laid to rest at Rose Hill and their families.

 TrouserPress.com :: Hagfish
Hagfish gained its first national notoriety as part of a CD that accompanied George Gimarc's book, Punk Diary 1970-1979 — an anachronistic context that makes perfect sense given the gabba gabba giddiness with which ebullient frontman George Stroud Reagan III (!) barrels through the pulsing guitars.
Nevertheless, the band's speedy, snotty bashing is clearly derived from the same set of sources, with a slightly stronger dose of Ramones damage.
It might be unfair to characterize this caffeinated combo as Dallas' entrants in the Green Day 500 — after all, Hagfish had made its impact on plenty of impressionable Lone Star minds long before Dookie-mania gripped the land.

From early in the 20th century it was common practice among phonograph record labels that if any company had a record that was a significant commercial success, other record companies would have singers or musicians "cover" the tune by recording a version for their own label in hopes of cashing in on the tune's success.
In 1978 it was covered by French singer Sheila accompanied by the B.

 Cover Spot
An extreme example of punk cover versions is the punk band GABBA, who mix the songs of ABBA and The Ramones.
Although cover versions are often produced for artistic reasons, they are commonly released to fill bargain bins in the music section of supermarkets and even specialized music stores, where uninformed customers can easily confuse them with original recordings (especially when they feature sound-alikes) because the packaging is often intentionally confusing.
Cover versions can also be in different languages; for example, Falco's 1982 German-language hit "Der Kommissar" was covered in English by After the Fire later in the decade, although the German title was retained.
