  Dennis Gabor Summary
Gabor's idea, which came to him while he was sitting on a bench at a tennis club in London in 1947, was to take an electron picture, distorted by problems with the lens, but one that could be corrected by optical means utilizing light.
Gabor finally did leave BTH in 1949, when he accepted a position as a reader in electron physics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology of the University of London (a reader is the equivalent of an associate professor in an American university).
Gabor also researched how human beings communicate and hear; the result of his investigations was the theory of granular synthesis, although Greek composer Iannis Xenakis claims that he was actually the first inventor of this synthesis technique (Xenakis, Formalized Music, preface xiii).

Lippmann's and Gabor's Revolutionary Approach to Imaging
When Gabor conceived the process of wavefront reconstruction in 1948, then intended to correct aberrations in electron microscopes, the available mercury arc lamp restricted his optical feasibility experiment to an object size of a few millimeters.
A highlight of the art became the portrait hologram of Gabor made with a pulse laser in the spring of 1971; the volume of the object space is several cubic meters.
Gabor's wavefront reconstruction scheme was a new principle in optics.

Molecular Expressions: Science, Optics and You - Timeline - Dennis Gabor
In the late 1940s, Dennis Gabor attempted to improve the resolution of the electron microscope using a procedure that he called wavefront reconstruction, but which is now known as holography.
Gabor’s idea was to take a distorted electron image, and then clarify that image via optical methods.
Due to the diffuseness of the light sources available at the time, the new method did little to improve the resolution of electron microscopes and even compounded the problem in the sense that two unclear images tended to be produced, instead of one.

Gabor termed the "bad" image, (which is indeed entirely unlike the object, it rather looks like a collection of fingerprints) a "hologram" (from the Greek holos, "the whole"), because it contained all the information.
Gabor emphasizes the normative approach; instead of extrapolating from present-day trends, which when continued long enough are almost certain to lead to tragic conflicts, let us invent in broad lines a future which is both possible and desirable and steer towards it.
Gabor was happily married to Marjorie L. Butler of Rugby in 1936.
