While there certainly was boxing in the Orient between the birth of the new century and World War II, and success in that period, it was in the post-war era that the real strength began to emerge.
Elorde started boxing in the early 1950s, won the Orient lightweight championship and on March 16, 1960, claimed the world junior-lightweight title on a seventh round knockout of Harold Gomez.
The name Gabriel Elorde appears a number of times in the WBC’s Hall of Fame records, saying much for his achievements in boxing.

Elorde was the WBC Junior Lightweight (Super Featherweight) champion from Mar. 20, 1960 until Jun. 15, 1967 and WBA Super Featherwight champion from Feb. 16, 1963 to Jun. 15, 1967 making him the longest reigning world junior lightweight champion ever (seven years and three months).
Elorde also challenged all time lightweight great Carlos Ortiz for his world title on two occasions.
Elorde retired with a record of 87 wins (33KOs), 27 losses and 2 draws and was named "the greatest world junior lightweight boxing champion in WBC history" in 1974.

Before Elorde became a attraction on the world stage he was already a national hero in the Philippines wining national and Asian titles from bantamweight to lightweight.
Elorde took a year of before returning but his best days were clearly behind him and lost his next 3 bouts, still he fought on until the age of 36.
Elorde became a chain smoker in retirement and died of lung cancer in 1985 at the age of 49.

Elorde, who turned pro in 1951 at age 16, had his first 11 fights in his hometown of Cebu, Philippines, winning 10 and suffering one kayo loss.
Although Elorde didn't get another title shot for the rest of the decade, he remained a ranked contender and eventually won national and regional titles as a lightweight.
Elorde's fall began in June of 1966 when he lost the Oriental lightweight title to Yoshiaki Numata via 12-round verdict.

Elorde said that prior to the Marquez fight, Lorona, then 23 (30-15-3, with 14 knockouts), trained for a month at the Wild Card Gym in California, the same gym where Pacquiao honed his skills before Ring Magazine's current No.1 featherweight fought Marco Antonio Barrera.
Elorde also said Marquez, who will stake his titles against Pacquiao on May 8, is a lot quicker and throws stronger punches than Barrera.

HAROLD Gomes, the American who lost his world junior lightweight crown to Gabriel "Flash" Elorde in an epic showdown four decades ago, will be honored with the Flash Elorde Memorial Trophy during the Banquet of Champions on March 25 at the Dusit Hotel Nikko in Makati.
Gomes' reign ended in that stinging loss to Elorde, who went on to retain the title for seven straight years, from 1960-1967, and become the only unbeaten boxer in his division in the post-war era.
The Elorde memorial award, which the Elorde family instituted last year, is given to former rivals of the Filipino boxing legend.

Gabriel “Flash” Elorde helped establish the unfashionable super-featherweight division in the 1960s and paved the way for legends like Alexis Arguello, Julio Cesar Chavez, Azumah Nelson and Brian Mitchell.
Elorde was born in Bogo on March 22, 1935 and soon became a national hero in the Philippines.

Spearheading the affair is Laura Elorde, the widow of The Flash, who reigned as world junior-lightweight champion from March 1960 until June 1967.
Elorde had won the title from Gomes when they met at the Araneta Coliseum on March 16, 1960.

Elorde said he received negative feedbacks from taxi operators and “concerned” citizens when they learned that Magahin would be released temporarily on a bail provided by Croucher, who personally visited the inmate at the Quezon city jail last Aug. 2.
Elorde said although his neighbor did not identify Magahin as among those who victimized his cab, “there were witnesses who claimed that one of the suspects was a former boxer.”
Elorde said he would just keep the P14,000 cash entrusted him by Croucher for Magahin’s bail and inform the WBF boss about the development.

Elorde retired a beaten man. With age creeping up on him and his forays into the higher division snuffed out by Ortiz, he was eventually dethroned by Yoshiaki Numata.
But Elorde remains a true Filipino champion even if all he took to his retirement were memories of his heyday.
