Gabriel is hoping to use the investigation as the basis of a new novel, but as the days of the case progress, he is drawn much deeper into a mystery which links the murder spree to the underworld of voodoo myth and practice, and towards a beautiful and mysterious New Orleans socialite.
Gabriel finds he has inherited the mantle of Schattenjäger, a sort of modern day Inquisitor, and that only by embracing his calling can he overcome the curse which has almost wiped out the Schattenjäger line and is the cause of both his nightmares and the Voodoo Murders.
Gabriel's arrival coincides with that of a tour group; supposedly all in town hunting for a legendary local treasure linked to the Knights Templar, the Cathars and supposedly connected to the Holy Grail.

It's all very intriguing, and, though not quite as sophisticated as the story that emerges in Gabriel Knight II, as far as I'm concerned, this one is a more satisfying game because it is more 'interactive' and is not interrupted continually by video sequences.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, is a solid, well designed adventure game that sits quite well within the murder mystery/detective genre, with highlights of horror to add to the intrigue.
Grace does the researching whilst Gabriel follows up on the clues, though in this first title you are stuck with Gabriel, you don't get to follow Grace and see what she gets up to.

Almost reluctantly, Gabriel agrees to investigate the strange disappearance/death of a young girl from a small farm on the outskirts of Munich.
Also, he manages to wander around with a massive clue in his hot little hands (a receipt for the purchase of a gun) whilst not being able to make the intuitive 'leap' and guess that the exclusive club he is investigating might have something to do with hunting.
Both Gabriel and Grace have their own inventories and Gabriel has his trusty tape recorder to keep track of conversations whilst Grace uses her notebook to write down her observations and findings.
