Gabriel Jonas Lippmann was born on August 16, 1845, in Hollerich, Luxembourg.
As a professor, Lippmann had little success in his research until 1873, when he was sent to Germany on a government mission to study new methods of education in science.
In 1908, Lippmann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics “for reproducing colors photographically based on the phenomenon of interference.” In 1883, he was elected to the Academy of Sciences and nominated as president in 1912.

Gabriel Jonas Lippmann Biography | World of Invention
Lippmann was born in Luxembourg, but his French parents settled in Paris when he was a young boy.
In 1886, Lippmann, a physics professor at the Sorbonne, lectured on a means to use optical " interference"--the same phenomenon that causes the color seen in soap bubbles, mother-of-pearl, and oil on a wet road--to induce the appearance of color on a photographic plate.
Lippmann's photographic method used a thick emulsion over a thin photographic plate coated with fine-grain silver bromide.

Gabriel Lippmann Biography | World of Physics
Lippmann theorized that the wire had somehow changed the tiny electrical current between the acid and the mercury, causing it to ball up.
Lippmann's investigations resulted in an 1873 publication that theoretically described the mercury phenomenon that Kühne had shown him as well as the device he developed from it, the capillary electrometer.
In 1891 Lippmann published a method where a transparent plate with a layer of silver nitrate, gelatin, and potassium bromide in emulsion was placed, emulsion-side-down, in a holder with mercury in it.

I first examined a photo of Gabriel Lippman by Boyer, from the Roger-Viollet archive, when I was in Paris in 1982 at the Hotel Henri IV in the Place Dauphine.
Lippmann seems to have been a physicist who had the ability to create experimental evidence of his important thoughts, and also had an immense theoretical grasp demonstrated by his published work on integral photography between 1908 and 1911, this basic work being the beginning of real unrestrictive dimensional imaging.
Conceptually, the stereo camera in the photo would lead one to believe, as I had believed originally, that the hypothesis of integral images probably was based inadvertently upon the actual negative size used in the camera, and that it was not a grand shift in concept from the popularity of stereo viewers in Victorian society.

 Early Photographic Processes  -  Lippmann
In 1891 a colour process, later to be known at the Lippmann process was announced by Gabriel Lippmann, who became head of the Sorbonne's Laboratories of Physical Research in 1886 and later went on to win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909.
The colours in a Lippmann Image are produced not by dies or pigments, but by the interference patterns from light at different wavelengths.
The exposure is made using a camera which has been adapted so that the plate rests directly against a layer of mercury which reflects back the light from the subject and causes an interference pattern which is captured as a latent image on the plate.
