 uni.ca - France's Involvement in Our Crisis
In late 1973 and early 1974, I interviewed Paul Martin and Maurice Couve de Murville, respectively Canadian and French ministers of External Affairs in 1967, and Gabriel Loubier, the leader of the Union Nationale and then a provincial cabinet minister.
Gabriel Loubier stated, and de Saint-Légier confirmed, that de Gaulle initially refused Quebec's invitation.
The contention of Couve de Murville, Martin, Drapeau, Loubier and others that de Gaulle had innocently used the slogan of the Quebec separatists because he had seen it on placards before him at city hall would appear to be disproven by the speeches he made before arriving in Montreal.
