In 1944 he won a place at the meritorious Government College Umuahia for his secondary school education.
This school has the enviable record of having produced most of Nigeria's post-conquest leading writers (including poet Christopher Okigbo, poet Gabriel Okara, novelists Chukwuemeka Ike, I.N.C. Aniebo and Elechi Amadi, and novelist, social critic and Ogoni human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa).
In 1948 Achebe won a scholarship to study medicine at the University College Ibadan, then part of London University.
