MINUTES AFTER Ruelas' hand was raised, Garcia collapsed in the ring with a blood clot on the brain and died 13 days later in a Las Vegas hospital without regaining consciousness.
Only Ruelas' wife knew what he would announce at a prefight press conference in Los Angeles Tuesday and when he did the response was immediate and positive.
It is a small step and Ruelas has no illusion it will in any way replace their father, but at least it is something and something is what he had to do for them.

The charges were the result of Ruelas allegedly assaulting, raping and restraining his ex-wife in her Muscatine home on Oct. 27, 2004.
Ruelas is currently being held in the Muscatine County jail.
