Sport | Weary Szabo could be out until 2003
Gabriela Szabo, the Olympic 5,000 metres and world 1500m champion, may not run again until 2003 after her decision announced yesterday to pull out of competition for the rest of the season.
The Yegorova episode was probably the final straw for Szabo, who has also had to cope with a simmering row with her Romanian rival Violeta Szekely, who was claiming £100,000 in damages against her compatriot for calling her "ugly" in a television programme last year.
Szabo said on her return from Canada that she hoped to start a family with Gyongyossy next year which, if the plan reaches fruition, would rule her out of the European Championships in Munich.

Szabo employed the same blistering kick in defending her world outdoor title in Seville, Spain in August, and she then won the 3,000 meter grand prix final in Munich, Gemany.
Szabo topped the world indoor and outdoor 1999 lists over both distances, and broke the world indoor 5,000 record when she ran 14 minutes, 47.35 seconds in February.

Szabo won with the same kind of devastating kick that won her a bronze in the 1500m at the Sydney Olympics, where she made up a huge gap with the frontrunners after nearly being wiped out by a fallen runner with about 200m to go.
Szabo made derogatory comments about Szekely's appearance and running style, in addition to hinting that Communist-era Romanian athletes were dopers, in an interview early in 2001, but publicly apologized for her remarks afterward.
Szabo, the two-time defending world champion, threatened to skip the 5,000m if Yegorova was allowed to run, but Yegorova is also one of a number of athletes found to have an irregularly high concentration of red blood cells -- a sign of possible EPO usage.
