The Third Quartet was commissioned by the Fishguard Festival, and was first performed there in 1979 by the Gabrieli Quartet, to whom it is dedicated.
The single-movement Fourth Quartet was composed to celebrate both the Delmé Quartet's twentieth birthday, and the 250th anniversary of the birth of that quartet composer par excellence, Joseph Haydn.
The Quartet is a remarkably unified work taking as its main formal idea the typical Haydn 'alternating variation' form, though here just one theme is varied in alternating slow and quick tempi, but which also provides motifs that generate separate developments in their own right.

When it comes to the great G major Quartet, the Gabrieli’s first movement is the more involving and dramatic of the two: the shimmering pp first theme — at 2'03" — is both more expressive and more finely tensed than on the Brandis recording (i.e.

But even these parts are played largely as though from the point of view of horrific external events, rather than of the individual experiencing them; and the real problem with the interpretation is that the outer movements are given a treacly-romantic, calculatedly over-dramatized treatment, which to my mind detracts from, even neutralizes, their emotional charge.
The Fitzwilliam Quartet are less completely authoritative and the late-seventies Decca recordings are rather nasal in quality, but their interpretation is in many ways more searching.
This is a recording which aspiring string quartets should hear, but whose authority in certain movements they would accept only at their peril.

String quartet - free-definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
A string quartet is a musical ensemble of four string musical instruments or a piece written to be performed by such a group.
Although any combination of four string instruments may be called a "string quartet", in practice, the term almost always refers to a group consisting of two violins (the "first" and "second" violin), one viola and one cello.
Haydn occasionally played his quartets on social occasions in an impromptu quartet ensemble of which Mozart was also a member.

The finer performance is that of the Gabrieli, in 1971, near or maybe at the beginning of their distinguished career.
There are many recordings in the catalogue and others combine virtuosity with tonal beauty and architectural strength but at super-budget price this Gabrieli performance emerges once again after thirty years its virtues undiminished.
The Trout features the ad-hoc combination of a pianist better known for her solo performances and symphonic principals — a recipe for musical disaster one would have thought.

The Pacifica Quartet's hearty and spacious account of Dvorák's Quartet No. 13 points up the work's unabashed symphonic character.
Like the Gabrieli, Pacifica places the scherzo's sharp accents in bold relief and unfurls a plush carpet of lower string sound for the soulful Adagio.
But, if I haven't already made clear, any lover of Dvorák's string quartets (and of string quartets in general) should buy this disc, and then prepare to be blissfully captivated for the next 75 minutes.
