Topic: Gadarenes

In the News (Sun 3 Jun 12)

Umm Qais - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Upon close observation of the earliest Greek manuscripts, the Alexandrian texts, the original reading of Matthew is “in the region of the Gadarenes,” and the original text of Mark and Luke is “in the country of the Gerasenes”.
It may be taken as certain that the jurisdiction of Gadara, as the chief city in these regions, extended over the country East of the Sea, including the lands of the subordinate town, Gerasa.
The Gadarenes captured some of the boldest of the Jews, of whom several were put to death, and others imprisoned (ibid., 5).

 G - Smith's Bible Dictionary
Gadara was captured by Vespasian on the first outbreak of the war with the Jews, all its inhabitants were massacred, and the town itself, with the surrounding villages, was reduced to ashes.
Gadarenes, Girgesenes, Gerasenes (These three names are used indiscriminately to designate the place where Jesus healed two demoniacs.
The district of the Gerasenes probably included that of the Gadarenes; so that the demoniac of Gergesa belonged to the country of the Gadarenes and also to that of the Gerasenes, as the same person may, with equal truth, be said to live in the city or the state, or in the United States.

Voice of the Son of God: Mount Hermon, Jordan, Galilee, Circuit of the Gentiles, Gadarenes, Garden of Man   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This was in the country of the Gadarenes where the man who lived among the tombs, and was possessed by a legion of demons, recognized Him as the Son of the most high God.
In the Gadarenes we see mankind who has fallen to its lowest state of depravity, and in a calm but sure word, Jesus sends all the demons into humanity's livelihood -- the swine -- and wrecks their "precious" economy.
After being driven from the land of the Gadarenes by the angry mob of swine herders and others of that region, He crossed back over to the other side and raised the dead twelve year old daughter of one of the synagogue's rulers (Mark 5:35-42).

Mark (Mar 5:1) and Luke (Luk 8:26) describe the miracle of the healing of the demoniac (Mat 8:28 says two demoniacs) as having been wrought "in the country of the Gadarenes," thus describing the scene generally.
The miracle could not have been wrought at Gadara itself, for between the lake and this town there is the deep, almost impassable ravine of the Hieromax (Jarmuk).

And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, there met him two possessed with demons, coming forth out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man could pass by that way.
And when he had come to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, there came out to him from the place of the dead, two who had evil spirits, so violent that no man was able to go that way.
Matthew 8:28 WEY: On His arrival at the other side, in the country of the Gadarenes, there met Him two men possessed by demons, coming from among the tombs: they were so dangerously fierce that no one was able to pass that way.

 A Commentary on the NT--Mark, Chapters 5-8
We say the region of the Gergesenes was of broader extent and signification than the region of the Gadarenes was, and that the region of the Gadarenes was included within it.
We believe that that Gadarene was a heathen; and that Mark and Luke mentioned only him on set purpose, that so they might make the story the more famous.
Our Saviour, therefore, healed those two in Matthew together, the one, a Gadarene and heathen, and the other from some other place, a Gergesene and a Jew; and that not without a mystery; namely, that there should be comfort in Christ both to Jews and Gentiles, against the power and tyranny of Satan.

UNTO THE OTHER SIDE OF DEATH to the Gadarenes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
In the same way that the demons of the Gadarenes saw Jesus as the full-grown, manifested Son of God, so shall the powers of darkness in the tombs of the carnal minds of this present age see the Sons of God when the dawn of manifestation comes.
Like the Dead Sea, the Gadarenes is the end of man's journey as he comes to the close of the ages wherein death has reigned, and it is in this region that the Sons begin their ministry of reconciliation and deliverance.
The heavy load of the fulness of death is lifted from humanity's burdened shoulders; and in its place is given righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holiness of Jesus Christ.

The Reformed Witness Hour: "The Gadarene Demoniac"
This is the portion of God's Word which tells us of the marvelous healing of the Gadarene demoniac - when Jesus cast a thousand demons out of one man. It is a very beautiful picture, first of all, of the powerful and sovereign love of God both to find and then to deliver its object.
We read in II Timothy 2:19, "The Lord knoweth them that are his." And again the Savior would say in John 10, "I know my sheep; my Father has given them to me." You see, the deliverance of this man from awful demon possession was not hit and miss, or a happy coincidence.
The Lord came to the land of the Gadarenes, which was a mountainous area.

The "Gadarenes" (meaning "a stranger drawing near") were the residents of Gadara, one of the cities of the Decapolis and the capital of the Roman province of Perea, controlled by Herod Antipas.
The miracle could not have taken place at Gadara itself, for between the lake and the town there is the deep, almost impassable ravine of the Jarmuk River (Hieromax).
Gadara, which is mentioned in the Gospels only in connection with the healing of the demon-possessed men (man), was dominant enough to give its name to the entire area (thus the term "region of the Gadarenes" in Matthew's account).

In Matthew it says "Gadarenes" while in Mark and Luke it says "Gerasenes." There are two possible explanations for the difference in spelling.
First, there could be a minor scribal copying error on the spelling as there are different spellings in different manuscripts.

Gadara was located east of The Jordan River on a mountain about 6 miles / 10 kilometers south-east of The Sea Of Galilee.
The people of Gadara were known as Gadarenes, although the general area was also known as the "country of the Gerasenes" after the city of Gerasa which was about 45 miles / 73 kilometers farther south.
They were still mostly Gentiles in the time of Christ, as indicated by their keeping of pigs (see Clean and Unclean) in the Scripture references below.

The variant readings 'Gadarenes' and 'Gergesenes' were probably scribal attempts (by scribes who knew of the Perean Gerasa but not of the lakeshore village) to correct what appeared to be an error in topography.
