Cod is the common name for the genus Gadus of fishes, belonging to the family Gadidae, and is also used in the common name of a variety of other fishes.
Some other related fish have common names derived from "cod", such as codling, codlet or tomcod (note that "codling" is also used as a name for a young cod).
Two exceptions are the Australasian Red Rock Cod, which belongs to a different order (see below), and the fish known simply as the Rock cod in New Zealand, Lotella rhacina, which as noted above actually is related to the true cod (it is a Morid cod).

Identification of Commercial Fish Species Belonging to the Orders Pleuronectiformes and Gadiformes: Library of ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel was used to establish an identification archive of fish species belonging to the orders Pleuronectiformes, or flat fish, and Gadiformes, or gadoid fish.
The 2 orders include species of different commercial value and interest that are frequently requested in European fish markets, but are susceptible to substitution either because they are morphologically similar or because they arrive on the markets already filleted or sliced.
The use of densitometry and image analysis coupled with a simple computer program overcomes the subjective evaluation of the patterns, making it possible to identify species correctly.
