The name itself was taken from the name of Majapahit's Prime Minister, Patih Gadjah Mada.
UGM is also known as one of the most reputable universities in Indonesia.

 Program to support emergency relief and long-term rebuilding in West Aceh : MDHS : The University of Melbourne
The Faculty of Medicine at University of Gadjah Mada (GMU) and Sardjito Hospital were requested by the Indonesian government to provide health and community support in the areas in Indonesia, Meulaboh in West Aceh hit hardest by the recent earthquakes and tsunami.
GMU are one of the few groups present in Aceh before the tsunami, providing health services to Aceh communities for the last several years during the conflict.
The Gadjah Mada University and Sarjito Hospital have a history of collaboration with the University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics and the Royal Children’s Hospital, particularly in the field of gastroenteritis and rotavirus research since 1975 and the University of Melbourne and GMU signed a Memorandum of Understanding several years ago.
