Gaegogi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is made from a specific breed of dog that differs from those breeds that are kept as pets.
Many people have argued that international organizations such as FIFA and PETA have no right to interfere with an ancient Korean custom, maintaining that the only difference between slaughtering a dog for food and slaughtering a cow or a pig is the culture in which it is done.
Pet owners and those in related industries assert that the relationship between working animals or pets and their owners is intrinsically different to that between humans and domesticated animals raised for food - notwithstanding that pet breeds are not used for gaegogi.

An international organization (also called intergovernmental organization) is an organization of international scope or character.
In certain cultures, dogs are raised on farms and slaughtered as a source of meat.

It is strange that people who are so sensitive about reports on mad cow and even bird flu diseases, are rather indifferent to the perennial controversy over dog meat, largely related to its sanitary status as much as morality.
A government measure to "sanitize and rationalize" the supply of dog meat has again generated a hot public debate on the desirability of the dog-eating culture but it would not significantly affect the consumption of "gaegogi" here.
The government step to prohibit cruel ways of slaughtering dogs and to strengthen hygienic overseeing of dog restaurants through the revision of pertinent statutes is definitely not an effort to discourage eating dog meat, as animal protection activists argue.
