  Gaff Rigs
Vangs died out sometime in the 1800s and are all but unknown to yachties but in old paintings and drawings vangs are used all the time on spritsail rigs and gaff rigs; the vang controls the end of the gaff and helps prevent sagging in going to windward.
The 30-foot gaff of the Norfolk wherry, which has to be cleared away and got up again when the mast is lowered for shooting bridges, is hoisted with a single halyard; so is the smaller gaff of the whaleboat used in the Azores.
With a single-part mast-rope I could pull the gaff flat amidships when a yachtsman's gale was blowing, and a single whip on the clew was ample for the lower sheet.

  Sail Ship Sails
Modern sails are designed such that the warp and the weft of the sailcloth are oriented parallel to the luff and foot of the sail.
In modern times a sail is cut of the extreme size which is capable of being carried in fine weather, and when the wind increases in strength it is reefed -- part is gathered up and fastened by reef points, small cords attached to the sail.
Outboard of the square sails might be set studdingsails [studding sail, studsail, stun's'l) -- a sail on a special spar, extended outboard of a square sail or sails, for added sail area in moderate winds.

Gaff rig - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gaff rig is a sailing rig (configuration of sails) in which a sail is a four-cornered fore-and-aft rigged item controlled at its peak and, usually, its entire head by a spar (pole) called the gaff.
The gaff enables a fore and aft sail to be four sided, rather than triangular, and creates an, up to, doubling of the sail area that can be carried by that mast and boom (if a boom is used in the particular rig).
Gaff rig remains the most popular rig for schooner and barquentine mainsails and other course sails, and spanker sails on a square rigged vessel are always gaff rigged.

 SAILING AND SEAMANSHIP
They might have 2 or 3 dozen sails and literally hundreds of lines to control them; every one of which had its own name and special place in the pin rail where they were made fast.
Gaff sails are secured to the mast either by hoops that encircle the mast and are fastened to the luff of the sail, or by a lacing; a line passed around the mast and through the grommets in the luff of the sail.
When this occurs, the wind gets in front of the mainsail instead of behind it where it ought to be and blows the sail, gaff, and boom over to the opposite side of the boat with impressive speed and a dreadful crash.

Sail-plan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In all sail plans, the architect attempts to balance the force of the sails against the drag of the underwater keel in such a way that the vessel naturally points into the wind.
However, due to the gaff on the top edge of the sail the center of effort is typically lower, somewhat reducing the angle of heel (leaning of the boat caused by wind force on the sails) compared to a similar sized Bermuda rigged sail.
On many warships, sails above the fighting top (a platform just above the lowest sail on which snipers were positioned) were mounted on separate masts ("topmasts" or "topgallant masts") held in wooden sockets called "tabernacles." These masts and their stays could be rigged or struck as the weather and tactical situation demanded.

Up until the 1920's and 30's gaff had been the universal rig, then came what was to be almost a death blow: the leg of mutton sail, or Bermuda rig.

Scandalizing is accomplished by lowering the peak of the gaff down against or close to the mast, effectively folding the sail in two and reducing the sail area by about 50%.
Sailing becomes extremely difficult and labored, especially to windward, and it is time to make way with haste to the nearest protected area.
