  Chicago Park District: Gage Park
When prominent businessman, attorney, and South Park Commissioner George W. Gage (--1875) died in office in 1875, his fellow board members decided to name a newly-developing park in his honor.
Although in 1905 the South Park Commission had pioneered the development of the nation's earliest fieldhouses, by the 1920s, Gage Park still did not have one.

The park was named for George Gage, a member of the South Park Commission, a precursor to the Chicago Park District.

In the 1970s and 1980s, several neighborhood organizations were formed to stabilize the area and to ease racial tensions: the Southwest Community Congress sought to improve race relations with bordering neighborhoods, whereas the Southwest Parish and Neighborhood Federation sought to curb real-estate blockbusting tactics and to maintain middle-class stability in the community.

 Chicago, Parks and Education Unite in Chicago: The Trust for Public Land
The city of Chicago had just completed a major study of park needs, and among its discoveries was that the Gage Park neighborhood needed 12 acres of new parkland to serve its residents adequately.
Gage Park badly needed a new school, and after a period of public debate, the school board and park district teamed up to create an innovative building project that would combine school and park facilities on the same property.
Because the city of Chicago was involved in the effort through its Park School Campus Program, the project was able to leverage more than $1 million for much-needed streets, storm sewers, sidewalks, gutters, and lighting surrounding the park.

Gage Park High sits a couple blocks west of what used to be the Southwest Side’s "color line." As late as the 1980 census, almost no fl families lived west of Western Avenue in the Gage Park and Chicago Lawn communities.
At Gage, the funds will shrink a $85,000 hole left in its budget when the School Reform Board of Trustees decided to use the system’s 1995-96 increase in state Chapter 1 funds to balance the general operating budget.
In the meantime, some Gage Park students who are caught in "hall sweeps" and sent to the discipline office complain that the makeshift bell system didn’t give them a full four minutes to get to class.

A Chicago Newspaper wrote an article about the "Thorndale Jarvis Organization" in which a Chicago Policer referred to the gang as a "bunch of jag offs", from that time forward they changed their name to the "Thorndale Jag Offs".
The old Chicago American did a lengthy series on Chicagos street gangs in either July or August of that year.
That paper became Chicago Today in 1969, it was a tabloid similar to the Sun Times.
