In science, a Gaia theory is a class of scientific models of the biosphere in which life fosters and maintains suitable conditions for itself by affecting Earth's environment.
Gaia theory today is a spectrum of hypotheses, ranging from the undeniable to the radical.
Gaia hypothesis led to the new science called biogeography, or even geophysiology, which take into account the interactions between biota, the oceans and the atmosphere.

Gaia theory (science) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gaia theory is a class of scientific models of the geo-biosphere in which life as a whole fosters and maintains suitable conditions for itself by helping to create an environment on Earth suitable for its continuity.
The first such theory was created by the English independent atmospheric scientist and chemist, Sir James Lovelock, who developed his theories in the 1960s before formally publishing them, first in the New Scientist of February 13, 1975 and then in the 1979 book "Quest for Gaia".
This theory is based on the simple idea that the biomass self-regulates the conditions on the planet to make its physical environment (in particular temperature and chemistry of the atmosphere) on the planet more hospitable to the species which constitute its "life".

Gaia philosophy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Gaia philosophy (named after Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth) is a broadly inclusive term for related concepts that living organisms on a planet will affect the nature of their environment – to make it more suitable for life.
While there were a number of precursors to Gaia theory, the first scientific form of this idea was proposed as the Gaia Hypothesis by James Lovelock, a UK chemist, in 1970.

Gaia theory is about the evolution of a tightly coupled systems whose constituents are the biota and their material environment, which comprises the atmosphere, the oceans, and the surface rocks.

THE GAIA HYPOTHESIS: IMPLICATIONS FOR A CHRISTIAN POLITICAL THEOLOGY OF THE ENVIRONMENT
Gaia is significant because it fuses scientific insight and religious imagination in a potentially energizing and transformative way, challenging persons across a broad spectrum of disciplines to deal in an integrative fashion with the ecological crisis.
Though a scientific theory, the Gaia hypothesis has, since its initial articulation in 1969, sparked a swirl of religious, New Age, and philosophical reflection, and challenged certain long-held assumptions about evolution, the importance of the human in determining environmental change, and the relationship between life and the environment.
For Thomas Berry, a Passionist priest and "geologian," the wellsprings of the Gaia theory are part of a continuum through which a new sense of the sacredness of the cosmos is emanating from modern science.

Present theories are based on nearly circular orbits and giant planets formed at several AU from the central star, in contrast with the very short orbital periods and high eccentricities found for several candidate planets.
The ability of Gaia to simultaneously and systematically determine planetary frequency and distribution of orbital parameters for the stellar mix in the Solar neighbourhood is a fundamental contribution that Gaia will uniquely provide, the only limitations being those intrinsic to the mission i.e.
Gaia measurements are particularly sensitive to such systems thanks to the mission duration and the favourable magnitude of Solar-type stars up to about 200 pc from the Sun (brighter than V = 12 mag).

Gaia, the name given to the Greek goddess of mother earth, is also the name given to a recently formulated scientific theory that the earth is alive, a theory conceived and advanced by several notable scientists, including British scholar James Lovelock and American iconoclast Lynn Margulis.
Gaia is the theory of the earth as an autopoietic, living system.
No less alluring than the depictions in Greek mythology of Gaia the dancer, daughter of Chaos and mother of the Titans, Gaia theory and the science of geophysiology are founded on the fundamental idea that all the ecosystems of the earth operate and evolve coherently to achieve planetary self-regulation.

JT responded to my satire "The Gaia Hypotheses" along the lines that I did not accurately represent the theory, and that the Gaia Hypothesis wasn't all bad and contains many good and optimistic features.
However, all she shows is that Lovelock limits himself to the "Weak" Gaia Hypothesis, at least in the passages quoted.
Hence my interest in showing that a mystical Gaia as validly ends in the worst pillaging of the earth by us, as in the alternative: the pillaging of mankind for the alleged sake of the earth.

The crop circle phenomenon was first reported during modern times in 1972 when two witnesses, Arthur Shuttlewood and Bryce Bond, sat on the slope of Star Hill near Warminster, England, hoping to catch a glimpse of the strange unidentifyed flying craft that had made this part of England a UFO Mecca for almost a decade.

The Gaia hypothesis suggests that all of earth’s life forms are part of one immense whole—these myriad diverse forms co-evolving and contributing interactively to produce and sustain the optimal conditions for the growth and prosperity of the totality of life, rather than each part just looking after its own interest.
Similar to Gaia theory is the Rosicrucian perspective that all living things are linked to each other and the Cosmos by vibrational energies that are necessary for growth and survival.
