In the village of Khamar Doshalia in Gaibandha district, 23 people died and almost all the 900 homes there were leveled, local administrator Saifullahil Azam said.

Mar 21: The death toll from yesterday’s deadly nor’wester that left a trail of destruction in Rangpur and Gaibandha districts, rose to 43 with over 600 injured as reports of more casualties reached here from remote villages today.
Most of the dead were crushed under collapsing houses or falling trees when the violent storm, one of the worst in recent memory, whipped entire sleeping hamlets Sunday night with a maximum wind speed of 150 kilometres per hour razing to the ground thousands of thatched houses and uprooting trees.
Two upazilas of Gaibandha district and one in Rangpur district were badly affected by the tornado.

Meanwhile, the official death toll in the Gaibandha tragedy today rose to 52 while nearly 900 people were being treated at different government and private hospitals in Rangpur and Gaibandha.
The highest 230 tornado injured were being treated in Gaibandha while 126 were in Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the condition of 22 was stated to be critical.
In Gaibandha district, at least 15 people were injured and around 50 mud houses razed to the ground as the kalboishakhi blew over the Palashbari upazila Tuesday night.

The twister accompanied by a hailstorm flattened 3,000 houses, destroyed crops, uprooted hundreds of trees and electricity poles and cut off communications to the 15 villages, located in one of the most impoverished parts of the country.
District police chief Bhanu Lal Das said the army and Bangladeshi paramilitary border forces had joined local authorities in a huge rehabilitation programme that is being overseen by two government ministers.

“You are going to the poorest district in all Bangladesh,” an attendant at the Dhaka bus terminal told me. Although I suspected he was exaggerating, it was reassuring to hear his appraisal of Gaibandha, the district town situated in northwest Bangladesh to which I moved that day.
In Gaibandha, a place having neither Christians nor other missionaries, the effort to assist persons having cleft lips is an excellent and quick means to help the community understand that the missioner has come in order to make happier the lives of persons who are neglected.
After two months in Gaibandha I had not yet been able to discover a dry plot of land on which to construct a wee house.
