Gaijin is the culmination of Z's disorienting and self-revelatory experience as an American submerged in Japanese culture for 6 months in 1999 through an NEA and Japan/US Friendship Commission Fellowship.
Gaijin explodes from dark silence with "Nihongo De Hana shoo," a vocal chant inspired by the Japanese alphabet ("ah," "i," "oo," "eh," "oh"Š) coupled with flash images of Japanese characters on a backstage screen.
By the end, in "Gaijin II: Inner Faces," Hayashi, Koga and Evans slowly rise from the floor in a nascent state, while individual voices continue to speak from differing experiences of gender and ethnicity.

It had originally been a holding pen to protect every day Japanese people from the sinister influence of the West and to safeguard the foreigners themselves from marauding samurai who saw this new breed as the very devil itself.
Others seemed happy to see gaijin and these, Vince decided, fell into two categories - those who saw a bigger profit in non-Japanese tenants and those who, usually through some previous good experience with gaijin whether overseas or in Japan, honestly believed that foreigners deserved the same deal as the Japanese.
This last category was by far the rarest and when Vince and Connie finally did find some of these right-minded individuals, they soon discovered that their clientele did not always share the real estate agents convictions or enthusiasm.

Thanks to a U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq that has been met by a fierce resistance movement, Iraqis get to go to the polls on January 30, 2005 in a country where many are terrified at being caught in the crossfire between the U.S. and the resistance.
Those roadblocks have proven to be mostly just rhetorical, but in the largest display of opposition against a nominee for the position in the post-World War II era, 13 minority members opposed Rice's nomination, surpassing the seven votes in 1973 against Henry Kissinger to become Richard Nixon's top diplomat.

While learning materials in Chinese high schools take special pains to outline Japanese aggression beginning with the 1874 invasion of Taiwan, China’s involvement in the 1950-53 Korea war is dismissed in one sentence.
At the same time such are the holes in modern Chinese history that the average mainland college graduate still believes China is a "peaceful country" which has fought wars only in self-defense.
