Anime Tourist - Gainax: Past, Present and Future
This spring (2002), Gainax fans were treated to a rare opportunity to hear and ask questions of  Hiroyuki Yamaga, Co-Founder of Gainax, as he talked about his company's past, present, and future projects.
Gainax as a group became very fat because of Evangelion and was really not able to move because of it, there was too dead weight.
When Gainax originally came to be, they were like skinny stray dogs and pretty much bit everything that moved.

Review: Kare Kano, by BadJew   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Kare Kano is actually the first time that Gainax has animated a manga--usually they do all their writing in house--and this is an amazing transition.
Gainax has managed to keep the manga feel, most notably in the charcoal and ink backgrounds and image shots, while giving a very TV feel that's impossible to get in the manga.
Gainax is well known for its use of classical music, so much so that whenever I hear Ode to Joy I can't help but think of Shinji screaming in a fetal position.

Throughout its history, Gainax has been plagued by budgetary problems and poor management, and in the wake of Evangelion's success, Gainax evaded taxes and its President, Takeshi Sawamura, was sentenced to jail for accounting fraud.
Gainax could be said to produce two types of anime today: commercial works like Mahoromatic and He is My Master versus more experimental works that follow the company's traditions, such as FLCL and Gunbuster 2.
Gainax has also produced a number of computer games, inlcuding a strip mahjong game featuring Evangelion characters, and its most famous games, the Princess Maker series, which was later adapted as Puchi Puri Yūshi.

Gainax (ガイナックス) (pronounced 'guy-nax') is a Japanese anime studio most famous for the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
As Daicon Films, Gainax was also notable for making a series of tokusatsu fan film shorts in the 1980s, usually parodies of monster movies and superhero shows, which have gotten lots of favorable media coverage.

GAINAX of old gone forever?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
It was, rather, the ego of the Gainax studio imprinting themselves all over the story, as if marking their territory with the manga-ka over what *THEY* think the story and shounen-vs-shoujo style should be.
Gainax reflexively went back toward catering to their male otaku audience and turned Kare Kano into a shounen show, basically violating the story's innate raison d'entre.
The first half of the Gainax show is almost cell-to-cell with the manga (albeit with the occasional Evangelion reference.) The psychology and characterizations are all Tsuda-san.

Gainax now produces two types of work, for better or worse: commercial works, which are often manga adaptations (Mahoromatic and the upcoming Goshijun-sama, both ecchi), and experimental works (Abenobashi, Gunbuster 2, Re: Cutie Honey, Melody of Oblivion).
Gainax is working on a 2005 anime adaptation of the manga, He is My Master.
It's an exciting time for Gainax right now: we have the return of Anno Hideaki to anime with Re: Cutie Honey, the return of Tsurumaki and the FLCL gang with Gunbuster 2, and a continuing series, Melody of Oblivion, which is (finally!) a worthy successor to Gainax's tradition of experimental anime.

Gainax provides a perfect example of the interconnections between anime as art form and as merchandising vehicle.
Before they ever started creating their own anime, the Gainax boys labored long hours manufacturing what are known in Japan as garage kits.
For instance, at the 1985 DaiCon, an annual science fiction convention held in Osaka, Gainax members called upon their connections in local society to convince the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra to attend the convention and play a medley of television animation theme tunes.

But Gainax's attempt to market merchandise in the United States collapsed in disarray, a victim of its own excessive ambition, says Shon Howell, who ran Gainax's US office in 1990 and 1991.
In January 1994, a strip-tease quiz game created by Gainax (a young woman takes off her clothes in response to correctly answered questions) gave the company a dubious honor: it was this case that set the legal precedent in Japan allowing a prohibition on sales of "sexually explicit" computer games to minors.
But the emphasis on multimedia shows that the Gainax brain trust has recognized that the return on investment for a successful multimedia software application - such as a computer game - dwarfs what is possible from an animated program.

You’d think that a studio like Gainax, with a creative team like Anno and Yamaga (collectively responsible for some of the freshest, most unusual, and most compelling anime ever produced) would be able to take an overdone, cliché-loaded concept like this and transform it into something witty, sharp, intelligent, and convention-breaking.
Gainax is as popular as it is precisely because they produce anime that isn’t average.
Despite being a Gainax production, and with the creative force of Anno and Yamaga behind it, it doesn’t have any of the cleverness or imagination or innocence-shattering brutality that those two are famous for.

Time will tell whether Evangelion will have a legacy as rich as Gundam's; so far Gainax does not appear inclined to release follow-up series, with the exception of enhanced footage/ending movies(which, IMHO is kind of a good thing, as I'll get to in a bit).
Gainax upped the ante by including jaw- droppingly good animation(the animation is easily the quality of good OAVs and some lousy movies, and this was on a TV series budget and time constraint), dynamic music, entertaining characters, and amazing sense of timing and plot.
Fans were angry over the ending, and demanded that Gainax make a better one, which they did in the forms of redone TV episodes and two movies.

When asked how much influence Gainax would have over that film, producer Hiroki Sato deferred all questions about control and oversight to ADV Films, the company that had made the formal announcement of the Evangelion film project one month earlier at the Cannes film festival in France.
The Gainax guys made another important point; when asked about the enthusiasm shown by fans at Fanime Con, they said they were pleasantly surprised that the fans were interested in anime that was made with Japan in mind, and not just series created for possible world-wide sale - which included Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh.
