Ma il suo primo lavoro nel mondo del cinema lo ebbe nel 1920 presso un nuovo studio londinese, il Players-Lasky-Studios, dove disegnò i titoli dei film per i due anni successivi.
Nel 1923 Hitchcock fu assunto dalla Gainsborough Pictures dove si occupò di tutto, dalla sceneggiatura, ai disegni, dai titoli alle scenografie fino al montaggio e all'aiuto regia.
Finalmente nel 1925, gli fu affidato il suo primo film da regista: "Il labirinto della passione".

In 1920, he obtained a full-time job at Islington Studios under its American owners, Players-Lasky, and their British successors, Gainsborough Pictures, designing the titles for silent movies.
As a major talent in a new industry with plenty of opportunity, he rose quickly.

He was rejected by the British military during the Great War because of an eye problem, and he went to work for the Dunlap Rubber Company as a personal assistant to a managing director.
In 1922, with Victor Saville and John Freedman, they went into independent film producing in London, and their first release was "Woman to Woman" directed by Graham Cutts in 1923.
Eventually he would gain recognition with "First Born" in 1928, which he directed and acted in and which was based on his own novel and play.

The director chose the play as the basis of his last silent film and first sound film (confusingly, the silent version was released second, for showing in cinemas that hadn't yet upgraded their projectors); it was adapted for the screen by Benn Levy and produced by British International Pictures.
Mick was a delightful man, very encouraging to writers, some of whom he would bring across from Hollywood in an effort to make our British movies more salable in the States.
As initially I always wrote my own dialogue, basically the picture would be mine - he would bring in other dialogue-writers after I left the picture.
