Titus Calpurnius Siculus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hardly anything is known of the life of Calpurnius; we gather from the poems themselves (in which he is obviously represented by Corydon) that he was in poor circumstances and was on the point of emigrating to Spain, when Meliboeus came to his aid.
Calpurnius was first printed in 1471, together with Silius Italicus and has been frequently republished, generally with Gratius Faliscus and Nemesianus.
The separate authorship of the eclogues of Calpurnius and Nemesianus was established by Moritz Haupt's De Carminibus bucolicis Calpurnii et Nemesiani (1854).

Besides the Institutes, which are a complete exposition of the elements of Roman law, Gaius was the author of a treatise on the Edicts of the Magistrates, of Commentaries on the Twelve Tables, and on the important Lex Papia Poppaea, and several other works.
Another circumstance which renders the work of Gaius more interesting to the historical student than that of Justinian, is that Gaius lived at a time when actions were tried by the system of formulae, or formal directions given by the praetor before whom the case first came, to the judex to whom he referred it.
It is clear from evidence of Gaius that this result was obtained, not by an independent set of courts administering, as in England previous to the Judicature Acts, a system different from that of the ordinary courts, but by the manipulation of the formulae.

That is the true reason Piso used the literary pseudonym of Flavius; it was not because of his alleged-but untrue and hardly necessary-adoption by Emperor Flavius Vespasian.

Gaius Caesar, then quite a young man, spoke for the Greeks; and when Lucullus found in favor of the Greeks, Antonius called the tribunes and swore that he was withdrawing from the suit because he could not get a fair hearing.
There was a general belief that Catilina and Gnaeus Piso, a profligate young man, had formed a conspiracy to murder the senate the year before, in the consulship of Cotta and Torquatus; and that slaughter had only been prevented from taking place because Catilina did not give the signal agreed upon.

Quite unanimously hated by citizens, with an increasing list of political enemies, Nero started to appreciate his loneliness when in 65 he discovered the Pisonian conspiracy[?] (named after Gaius Calpurnius Piso, who intended taking his place) and the involving of old friends like Seneca in the plot.
The emperor left for Greece, in 67, where he amused his hosts with other artistic performances, while in Rome Nymphidius[?] (a colleague of Tigellinus, taking the place of one of the Pisonian conspirators) was collecting the support of praetorians and senators.
Back in Rome after the tournée, Nero found a quite cold atmosphere; Gaius Iulius Vindex, the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, revolted, and this brought Nero to a paranoid hunt for eventual threats; in this state of mind he ordered the elimination of any patrician with suspect ideas.
